Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- السَّحَرَة (As-Saharah): The magicians/sorcerers whom Pharaoh had gathered from across his kingdom to confront Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.
- أَجْرًا (Ajran): A reward, compensation, or bounty—whether material wealth, status, or honor.
- الْغَالِبِينَ (Al-Ghalibin): The victors, those who overcome and prevail.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the magicians arrived before Pharaoh, having been summoned from every corner of his dominion to challenge Musa, peace be upon him, they did not waste a moment. They addressed their master directly and asked: "Will we truly receive a reward—whether in wealth, position, or honor—if we are the ones who prevail over Musa?"
This question reveals the state of their hearts. They were not men of faith seeking truth; they were professionals of illusion, driven by worldly gain. Their sole concern was the prize, not the purpose. They wanted assurance from Pharaoh before they would even begin their craft. This shows how the love of worldly reward can blind a person to the greater reality—for here they stood, about to confront the truth of Allah with falsehood, yet their minds were fixed only on what they would receive in return.
Notice how they conditioned their effort on victory: "if we are the victors." They were confident, arrogant, and fully invested in their own power. Little did they know that the One who sent Musa was about to overturn all their expectations and expose their magic as nothing but a fleeting illusion.
A Call to Reflection:
This scene is a mirror for every soul. How often do we, like these magicians, bargain with the truth? We ask: "What will I gain if I follow this path? What is my reward?" But the believer is different. The believer acts for Allah alone, seeking His pleasure above all else. The magicians sought a perishable reward from a perishable tyrant, and they lost everything. But those who strive for Allah's cause, even if they appear to lose in this world, have secured the eternal reward that never fades.
Let this verse inspire you to purify your intentions. Do not make your obedience to Allah conditional upon worldly gains. Instead, be like the believers who, when they recognized the truth, fell down in prostration and declared: "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds." For true success is not in winning a contest of magic, but in winning the pleasure of the Almighty—a prize that no Pharaoh can grant and no tyrant can take away.
