Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Na'am" (نَعَمْ): Yes — an affirmative response expressing agreement and promise.
  • "Idhan" (إِذًا): In that case / then — indicating a conditional outcome tied to the preceding context.
  • "Al-Muqarrabeen" (الْمُقَرَّبِينَ): Those brought near — referring to individuals granted high status, close companionship, and special honor by a ruler.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse captures Pharaoh’s response to his magicians when they sought a reward for their task. They had asked him: "Will we indeed have a reward if we are the victors?" (26:41). Pharaoh replied: "Yes, and you will then surely be among those brought near [to me]."

Pharaoh’s answer was a promise of worldly gain — wealth, status, and proximity to his court. He sought to secure their loyalty and motivate them to defeat Moses (peace be upon him) by dangling the allure of honor and privilege. The phrase "in that case" (idhan) ties his promise to their success: only if they triumphed over Moses would they receive this elevated rank. This reveals Pharaoh’s cunning — he used material incentives to bind people to his cause, yet his promise was hollow, built on falsehood and arrogance.

This scene is a profound lesson for humanity. Pharaoh, a tyrant who claimed divinity, could only offer fleeting worldly rewards. In contrast, Allah — the true Sovereign — promises His sincere servants an everlasting reward: Paradise and His eternal pleasure. The magicians, as we learn later in the surah, were ultimately transformed by the truth of Moses’ miracle. They realized that the transient honors of a mortal king paled in comparison to the eternal glory of the Creator, and they fell prostrate in faith, declaring: "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron" (26:47-48).

For the believer, this verse serves as a reminder to never be seduced by the temporary attractions of this world — wealth, power, or proximity to influential people — if they come at the cost of truth and obedience to Allah. True honor lies not in being "brought near" to a tyrant, but in being among those whom Allah has brought near to Himself through faith, righteousness, and submission. As Allah says: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you" (49:13). Let us, therefore, seek the nearness of Allah, for His promise is certain and His reward is everlasting.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Ash-Shu'ara

That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"
And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"
He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."
Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."
So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."
