Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • أَطْمَعُ (atma'u): I hope, I aspire, I yearn for with confident expectation.
  • خَطِيئَتِي (khati'ati): My mistake, my error, my sin.
  • يَوْمِ الدِّينِ (yawm ad-deen): The Day of Recompense, the Day of Judgment, when every soul is repaid for what it has done.

The Interpretation:

In this profound verse, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) continues his powerful address to his people, declaring the essence of his faith and his relationship with his Lord. After affirming that Allah alone is his Creator, Guide, Provider, Healer, and the One who grants life and death, he now reaches the pinnacle of his supplication and hope.

Ibrahim says: *"And the One who I hope will forgive my sin on the Day of Recompense."*

This is a beautiful declaration of both humility and certainty. Despite his immense status as a Prophet and the "Friend of Allah" (Khalilullah), Ibrahim does not claim perfection or freedom from error. Instead, he acknowledges his human weakness and places his complete hope in Allah's mercy and forgiveness.

The "sin" (or sins) referenced here are not major transgressions, but rather the minor slips and permissible interpretations that Ibrahim made in his lifetime — such as his statement "I am sick" to avoid participating in his people's idolatrous festival, his rhetorical question "Rather, this large one did it" to expose the futility of idol worship, his remark about the star "This is my Lord" as a step-by-step argument against celestial worship, and his protective statement about Sarah being his sister. These were not moral failures but strategic, divinely guided actions in the service of monotheism. Yet, Ibrahim — in his profound piety — still sought forgiveness for them, teaching us that even the best of Allah's creation remains humble before their Lord.

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: Hope in Allah's forgiveness is a defining quality of true faith. Ibrahim does not say "the One who will definitely forgive me" out of arrogance, nor does he despair of Allah's mercy. Rather, he expresses a confident hope — a hope rooted in the knowledge that Allah is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, and that His mercy encompasses all things.

Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful balance: Ibrahim combines action with hope, effort with reliance, and worship with the expectation of forgiveness. He does not use his hope as an excuse to sin, nor does he let his awareness of human imperfection drive him to despair. Instead, he walks the straight path, does his best, and leaves the rest to Allah's boundless grace.

This is the way of the Prophets — and it is the way of every sincere Muslim. We strive, we worship, we obey, and we hope. We never become arrogant in our deeds, and we never lose hope in Allah's mercy. For Allah Himself has promised: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful"* (Az-Zumar 39:53).

So let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah with a heart full of hope, to acknowledge your shortcomings without being overwhelmed by them, and to trust that on the Day of Recompense, the Most Merciful will deal with you not according to your deeds alone, but according to His infinite grace and compassion.
