Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Hukman (حُكْمًا): Knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and sound judgment in religious matters. Some scholars interpret it as prophethood (nubuwwah).
  • Alhiqni (أَلْحِقْنِي): Join me, unite me, or make me reach.
  • Bis-Salihin (بِالصَّالِحِينَ): The righteous ones — specifically referring to the righteous prophets and messengers who came before, and generally to all the virtuous servants of Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This is a beautiful and profound supplication from Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), the beloved friend of Allah (Khalilullah), as he raises his hands in humility before his Lord. In this verse, Ibrahim asks Allah for two precious gifts:

First, he prays: "My Lord, grant me Hukman" — meaning, bestow upon me true understanding, wisdom, and discernment in matters of faith and religion. This is the knowledge that illuminates the heart, guides one's actions, and enables a person to judge between truth and falsehood with clarity and insight. It is the kind of knowledge that is not merely academic but transformative — knowledge that brings one closer to Allah and instills righteousness in every deed. Some commentators explain this as the gift of prophethood, which Allah indeed granted him.

Second, he prays: "And join me with the righteous" — meaning, unite me with Your righteous servants, especially the prophets who came before me, and admit me into Paradise in their company. This reflects Ibrahim's deep longing not just for personal salvation, but for the companionship of the virtuous — because the company one keeps in the Hereafter reflects the company one loves in this world. He yearned to be in the company of his righteous forefathers and fellow messengers, such as Nuh, Hud, Salih, and others, in the eternal bliss of Jannah.

This dua teaches us a profound lesson: that true success lies in combining beneficial knowledge with righteous company. Knowledge without righteous action is incomplete, and righteous action without good company is difficult to sustain. Ibrahim, despite being one of the greatest prophets, still humbly asked Allah for these blessings — showing us that no matter how far we have come in our faith, we should never stop asking Allah for more guidance, wisdom, and the company of the righteous.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, look at the humility of this great prophet! Ibrahim — the father of prophets, the one whom Allah took as a close friend — still turned to his Lord with a heart full of need, asking for knowledge and righteous companionship. If the prophets needed to make such supplications, how much more do we need to turn to Allah with the same plea?

This verse invites you to make this dua a constant part of your life. Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge that brings you closer to Him, and ask Him to surround you with righteous friends who remind you of Him and help you on the path to Paradise. For indeed, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom he takes as a close friend." (Reported by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)

Make this supplication your own, and know that Allah — the Generous, the All-Hearing — answers the call of those who call upon Him with sincerity. May Allah grant us all beneficial knowledge, righteous companionship, and a place among the righteous in the highest gardens of Paradise. Ameen.
