Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- yumītuni (يُمِيتُنِي): He causes me to die — i.e., He takes my soul at the appointed time of death.
- thumma yuḥyīni (ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ): Then He will bring me back to life — i.e., resurrect me on the Day of Judgment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) continues his profound address to his people, declaring the absolute sovereignty of Allah over life and death. He says: *"And He who will cause me to die, then bring me to life again."*
This statement is a cornerstone of Islamic faith — the belief in the Hereafter. Ibrahim is teaching his people, and all of humanity, that the One who created us from nothing is fully capable of bringing us back after death. Death is not an end; it is a transition. The same Allah who gave us life the first time will give us life a second time, and then we will be held accountable for our deeds.
Notice the sequence: *"then bring me to life"* — the word "then" (thumma) indicates a period of waiting, the interval of the grave (barzakh), after which the resurrection will occur. This is not a matter of doubt or speculation for the believer; it is a certainty promised by the Most Merciful.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful declaration from the father of the prophets. Ibrahim did not say "perhaps" or "maybe" — he spoke with absolute conviction. This certainty is what transforms a believer's life. When you know that death is not the final chapter, but rather a door to an eternal life, your priorities shift. You begin to live for what truly matters: pleasing your Creator, seeking His forgiveness, and preparing for the day you will meet Him.
The verse that follows in this same surah (82) completes the picture: *"And He who I aspire that He will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense."* So death and resurrection are not meant to frighten us into despair, but to awaken us to the reality of accountability — and to the boundless mercy of Allah, who forgives those who turn to Him sincerely.
Let this verse be a reminder: every soul will taste death, but for the believer, death is merely the beginning of an eternal bliss in the presence of the Most Merciful. So live today as one who is certain of tomorrow, and let your hope in Allah's mercy and your fear of His justice guide every step you take.
