Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Queen of Sheba (Bilqis) arrived at the court of Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him), she was put to a wise test. Her throne had been miraculously transported to Sulayman’s presence in the blink of an eye, and she was asked: "Is this your throne?" This question was not meant to embarrass her, but to assess her perception, intelligence, and faith. She answered with remarkable wisdom and caution: "It is as if it were it." She neither firmly confirmed nor denied, because she recognized its striking resemblance to her own throne, yet she could not fathom how it could have arrived there. This answer revealed her sharp intellect and her ability to speak with prudence.
At that moment, Sulayman (peace be upon him) recognized her wisdom and discernment, and he turned to his people—or to her—saying: "And we were given knowledge before her, and we were Muslims." This was an expression of gratitude to Allah, acknowledging that he and his followers had been blessed with true knowledge of Allah’s omnipotence and the reality of His signs long before she came to believe. They had already submitted to Allah’s will, embraced His religion, and accepted His sovereignty without hesitation. This statement also carried a subtle da’wah (invitation) to the Queen, showing her that the foundation of Sulayman’s power was not worldly wealth or magic, but divine knowledge and sincere submission to the Creator.
This verse teaches us the beauty of wisdom in speech and the importance of acknowledging Allah’s favors. It also highlights how true knowledge leads to humility and submission, not arrogance. Sulayman’s words inspire every believer to strive for knowledge that draws them closer to Allah, and to be among those who say, "We are Muslims"—fully surrendered to their Lord, grateful for His guidance, and eager to share that light with others. The story of Bilqis is a testament to how Allah guides sincere seekers of truth, regardless of their background, and how a single moment of reflection can transform a queen into a believer.
