Word Meanings:

  • Wa Ṣaddahā (وَصَدَّهَا): And prevented her / turned her away
  • Min Dūnillāh (مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ): Besides Allah, other than Allah
  • Kāfirīn (كَافِرِينَ): Disbelievers, those who reject faith in Allah

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse tells us about the Queen of Sheba (Bilqis) and the reason she had not embraced the truth of monotheism before her encounter with Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him). She was a woman of intelligence and wisdom, yet she remained a disbeliever — and the reason is clearly stated here: her worship of the sun, along with her people, had veiled her heart and blinded her spiritual insight. She had grown up in a society that worshipped the sun instead of Allah, and she simply followed the ways of her forefathers and her people without questioning them. This blind following and inherited false beliefs acted as a barrier between her and the truth.

The verse highlights a profound reality: false beliefs, when deeply rooted in one's upbringing and culture, can cloud even the sharpest intellect. The Queen was not foolish — she was capable of recognizing truth when it was presented clearly to her, and indeed, when Sulayman invited her to Islam, she eventually submitted. But before that, her environment and inherited religion had prevented her from seeing the light of monotheism.

This teaches us a crucial lesson: we must never accept beliefs merely because they are inherited from our families or societies. Every person is responsible for seeking the truth with an open heart and a sincere mind. The sun, the moon, the stars — all of these are created things, subservient to Allah's command. How can one worship a creation and ignore the Creator? How can one bow to a being that rises and sets by Allah's will, and turn away from the One who controls it all?

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own heart. Are there beliefs, habits, or cultural practices that stand between you and the worship of Allah alone? The Queen of Sheba had the courage to leave her false beliefs behind when the truth became clear to her. She did not cling to the ways of her ancestors out of pride or stubbornness. She chose truth over tradition, and Allah honored her with guidance.

Islam calls you to the purest and most logical belief: that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of all that exists. This is not a blind faith — it is a faith that resonates with the intellect and the natural disposition (fitrah) that Allah has placed within every human being. Open your heart, reflect on the world around you, and let the truth of tawheed (monotheism) illuminate your soul, just as it illuminated the heart of that noble queen.

📜 Verse 41-45 — An-Naml

He said, "Disguise for her her throne; we will see whether she will be guided [to truth] or will be of those who is not guided."
So when she arrived, it was said [to her], "Is your throne like this?" She said, "[It is] as though it was it." [Solomon said], "And we were given knowledge before her, and we have been Muslims [in submission to Allah].
And that which she was worshipping other than Allah had averted her [from submission to Him]. Indeed, she was from a disbelieving people."
She was told, "Enter the palace." But when she saw it, she thought it was a body of water and uncovered her shins [to wade through]. He said, "Indeed, it is a palace [whose floor is] made smooth with glass." She said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allah, Lord of the worlds."
And We had certainly sent to Thamud their brother Salih, [saying], "Worship Allah," and at once they were two parties conflicting.
