Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Thamud: An ancient Arab tribe that lived in the rocky dwellings of Al-Hijr (between modern-day Saudi Arabia and Jordan). They were the successors of the people of 'Ad in power and prosperity.
- Their brother Salih: The Prophet Salih (peace be upon him), called "brother" because he was from the same tribe and lineage as them, not because of any blood relation in faith.
- Two parties (fareeqan): Two distinct groups — one believing and one disbelieving.
- Yakhtasimoon: They dispute and argue, each side claiming that the truth is with them.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, informs us in this verse about His Messenger Salih (peace be upon him), whom He sent to the people of Thamud. They were a people blessed with immense strength, wealth, and skill in carving homes out of mountains. Yet, despite these blessings, they had fallen into shirk (associating partners with Allah) and disobedience.
Allah sent Salih to them as a brother from among themselves — a man they knew, trusted, and whose honesty and integrity were well-established among them. His message was simple, clear, and profound: "Worship Allah alone, and do not set up any partner with Him." This is the essence of the call of all prophets — to direct worship exclusively to the One who created them, sustains them, and to whom they will all return.
But notice what happened: The moment Salih delivered this message, the people did not unite in acceptance or even in thoughtful reflection. Instead, they split into two camps — one group believed in his message and followed him, while the other rejected it and opposed him. Both groups then fell into heated dispute, each claiming that they were upon the truth and that the other was misguided.
This division is not unique to Thamud — it is the pattern of human response to truth throughout history. When the truth is presented clearly, hearts either embrace it with humility or reject it with arrogance. The believers held firm to the Oneness of Allah, while the disbelievers clung to their inherited traditions and worldly desires.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on this scene: A single man stands before his people with a message of pure monotheism — the worship of the One God. He asks nothing for himself, no wealth, no status, no reward except from His Lord. Yet the people respond with division and argumentation. How often do we see the same today? When the truth of Islam is presented, some accept it with open hearts, finding peace and purpose, while others argue and dispute without sincere investigation.
The lesson here is profound: The truth does not change based on how many accept or reject it. The truth is what Allah has revealed, and the only question that matters is: Are you on the side of truth, or are you disputing against it? The believers of Thamud were few, but they were on the right path. The disbelievers were many and powerful, but they were upon falsehood.
Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart. Do you worship Allah alone, with sincerity and devotion? Do you submit to His commands without argument? Or do you find yourself disputing, hesitating, or following the majority without evidence? Remember that on the Day of Judgment, you will stand alone before Allah — not with your tribe, not with your family, not with your nation — but as an individual responsible for your own choices.
The call of Salih is the call of every prophet: "Worship Allah alone." It is the key to success in this life and the next. Embrace it with a sincere heart, and you will find peace that no dispute can disturb and a light that no darkness can extinguish. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and make us among those who hear the truth and accept it with humility and love.
