Tafsir (Explanation):
Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) addressed his people—who were stubborn in their disbelief and mockingly challenged him to bring the promised punishment—with a gentle yet firm question: "O my people, why do you seek to hasten the evil (the punishment) before the good (repentance and faith)?" He was astonished at their foolishness: instead of rushing toward what would destroy them, why did they not rush toward what would save them? They had been warned of a severe torment if they persisted in their rejection, yet they arrogantly demanded it to come quickly, believing—out of sheer ignorance—that if the punishment descended, their repentance at that moment would benefit them. Salih exposed the fallacy of this belief by guiding them to the correct path: "Why do you not seek Allah’s forgiveness for your sins and turn back to Him in repentance *before* the punishment arrives?" For once the punishment comes, no repentance will be accepted, and no mercy will be shown. He encouraged them to seize the opportunity while the door of repentance is still open, so that they might attain Allah’s mercy—the very mercy that would spare them from destruction and grant them success in this life and the Hereafter.
Da‘wah (Call to Allah):
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul: do not delay your return to Allah, and do not be arrogant in your sins. The mercy of Allah is vast, but it is for those who seek it *before* it is too late. How often do we see people who persist in wrongdoing, joking about the punishment of Allah, or delaying their repentance with empty promises? Dear reader, the door of forgiveness is open right now—so why not be among those who say, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, so forgive us and have mercy upon us"? Do not wait for the storm to strike before you build your shelter. Turn to Allah today, seek His forgiveness sincerely, and let His mercy embrace you. For He is the Most Merciful, and His mercy is far greater than your sins—but it is only for those who ask while they still can.
