He said, "I was only given it because of knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(I was given it): Refers to the immense wealth and treasures that Qarun possessed.
(Upon knowledge I have): Qarun claimed he received this wealth due to his own knowledge, skill, or merit.
(Generations/communities): Refers to past nations or peoples who came before him.
(Mightier than him in power): Those who were physically stronger or more formidable.
(More in accumulation): Those who gathered even greater wealth and resources.
(The criminals will not be asked about their sins): Meaning they will not be questioned in a way that allows excuse or defense, because Allah already knows everything.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the sincere believers among his people advised Qarun not to be arrogant and to remember the blessings of Allah, he responded with pride and self-conceit, saying: *"I was only given this wealth because of knowledge I possess."* He meant that he deserved this fortune due to his own intelligence, skill in trade, agriculture, and managing wealth — or as some scholars explained, he claimed that Allah knew he was worthy of it and thus favored him. Either way, his statement reflected a heart blinded by arrogance, attributing his success entirely to himself rather than to the mercy and will of Allah.

Then Allah addresses him with a powerful rhetorical question: *"Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him entire generations who were mightier than him in strength and greater in accumulation of wealth?"* This is a stern rebuke. Qarun was not the first wealthy man in history, nor the strongest. Many nations before him — like 'Ad, Thamud, and Pharaoh — had far more power, resources, and numbers, yet their wealth and might did not protect them from Allah's punishment when they transgressed. Their treasures did not save them, and their armies could not defend them. So why did Qarun feel so secure?

The verse concludes with a profound truth: *"And the criminals will not be asked about their sins."* On the Day of Judgment, the guilty will not be questioned in the usual sense — not because they will be ignored, but because Allah, the All-Knowing, is fully aware of every sin they committed. Their questioning will be one of rebuke and humiliation, not of seeking information. They will be cast into the Fire without lengthy interrogation, for their deeds are already recorded and known.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. Wealth, knowledge, and power are all tests from Allah — not signs of His favor in an absolute sense, nor proof of our superiority. How often do we see people today who boast of their degrees, their businesses, or their achievements, believing they earned everything by their own brilliance? They forget that every breath, every opportunity, and every skill is a gift from the Creator.

The story of Qarun is a mirror for humanity. His wealth eventually swallowed him into the earth, and he could not save himself. The Quran teaches us humility: no matter how much we accumulate, we are but travelers in this world, accountable to Allah for how we used His blessings. True success lies not in the abundance of possessions, but in gratitude, generosity, and obedience to Allah.

Let this verse inspire you to check your heart: Do you see your blessings as from Allah or from yourself? Do you use your wealth and knowledge to serve others or to elevate your own ego? Remember, the mighty nations of the past are gone, and so will we be. The only thing that remains is our faith and good deeds. So be humble, be grateful, and be among those who use their blessings to draw closer to Allah — for He is the One who gives, and He is the One who takes away.

📜 Verse 76-80 — Al-Qasas

Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, "Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters."
He said, "I was only given it because of knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked.
So he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, "Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qarun. Indeed, he is one of great fortune."
But those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for he who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient."
