Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zeenatihi (زينته): His adornment, splendor, and luxurious display of wealth and finery.
- Hazzin (حظ): A portion, share, or fortune — here referring to a great share of worldly riches and status.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Qarun stepped out before his people in full display of his magnificent adornment — his riches, his grandeur, and his impressive entourage — deliberately seeking to project his greatness and overwhelm others with the sight of his abundant wealth. He did this not out of humility or gratitude, but out of pride and a desire to show off his worldly power.
When the people saw this dazzling scene, those among them who were captivated by the fleeting pleasures of this worldly life — those whose hearts were attached to material gain — were overtaken by envy and longing. They exclaimed with regret and yearning: "If only we had what Qarun has been given! If only we possessed such wealth, such status, and such splendor!" They then added, acknowledging his fortune: "Indeed, Qarun is truly a man of great luck and an immense share of worldly prosperity."
These words reveal a dangerous state of heart — one that measures success by material accumulation and judges honor by outward display. They saw the glitter of gold and forgot the reality of the Hereafter. They admired the temporary and overlooked the eternal. This is a profound lesson for every believer: the love of this world can blind the heart to the true purpose of life, and the envy of the wealthy can lead one down a path of ruin, just as it did for Qarun himself, whose end was to be swallowed by the earth.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: What is it that you truly desire? Is it the fleeting glitter that fades with time, or the everlasting reward that never diminishes? The people who envied Qarun did not know that his wealth would soon become his destruction. How often do we look at the rich and wish for their riches, without realizing that the most precious treasure is a content heart, a grateful tongue, and a life lived in obedience to Allah? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Richness is not having many possessions, but richness is the contentment of the soul." So turn your longing toward what truly matters — the pleasure of Allah and the gardens of Paradise, which are far greater than anything Qarun possessed or any wealth this world can offer.
