Tafsir (Explanation):
Among mankind there are those who declare with their tongues, "We believe in Allah," yet when they face harm, persecution, or oppression for the sake of their faith—when they are tested by the torment of disbelievers—they crumble. They equate the temporary suffering inflicted by people with the severe punishment of Allah, and in their weakness, they abandon their faith to escape immediate pain. They fail to realize that the punishment of Allah in the Hereafter is far greater and everlasting, while the harm of people is fleeting and finite.
These are the weak-hearted who profess faith only in times of ease and safety. But when the believers gain victory and Allah grants triumph to His Messenger and the faithful, these same people rush forward, claiming, "We were always with you! We stood by your side!" They seek to share in the victory without having borne any of the burden or hardship.
Allah, the All-Knowing, exposes their hypocrisy with a profound question: "Is Allah not best aware of what is in the hearts of all beings?" Indeed, He knows every hidden thought, every concealed intention, and every secret within the breasts of all creation. Nothing escapes His knowledge—neither the faith that is genuine nor the disbelief that is disguised.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: Faith is not a mere word uttered by the tongue, but a conviction that settles in the heart and is proven through patience and steadfastness in the face of trials. The road to Paradise is paved with tests, and those who turn back at the first sign of hardship are not worthy of the eternal reward. Allah sees all, and He knows who truly believes and who merely claims to. So be sincere in your faith, endure with patience, and trust that Allah's knowledge encompasses everything—for He will reward the truthful for their truthfulness and hold the hypocrites accountable for their deception.
