Key Words and Phrases:

  • Bader (بَدْرٍ): A famous well located between Mecca and Medina, where the first major battle between the Muslims and the disbelievers of Quraysh took place in the second year after the Hijrah (migration to Medina).
  • A-dhillah (أَذِلَّةٌ): Here it means "few in number and weak in equipment and resources," not "humiliated" in the sense of disgrace. It refers to their state of vulnerability and lack of military strength at that time.
  • Fattaqullāh (فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ): Fear Allah, meaning to be mindful of Him by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
  • La'allakum tashkurūn (لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ): "So that you may be grateful" — here, "la'alla" indicates purpose and cause, meaning: so that gratitude may be your response to His blessings.

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers, recall with gratitude and reverence the mighty favor of Allah upon you at the Battle of Badr. You were a small, poorly equipped group — around 300 men with limited weapons and few horses — while your enemy, the Quraysh of Mecca, came with over a thousand soldiers, fully armed and well-supplied. By all human calculations, the outcome seemed hopeless. Yet Allah granted you a decisive victory, humbling the arrogant and exalting His word. This was not by your strength or strategy, but purely by His divine will and support.

This verse was revealed in the context of the Battle of Uhud, where the Muslims suffered a setback after some of them disobeyed the Prophet's (peace be upon him) orders. Allah reminds them: "You tasted victory at Badr when you were even weaker — so why do you now falter? The victory came from Allah alone, not from your numbers or might." It is a gentle yet firm call to correct their course.

Therefore, the command follows: "Fear Allah" — be conscious of Him in all your affairs, uphold His commands, and stay away from what He has forbidden. Do not let pride, disobedience, or love of worldly gains creep into your hearts, for these were the very causes of the setback at Uhud. If you remain steadfast in taqwa (God-consciousness), you will be guided to gratitude. And gratitude is not merely a word on the tongue; it is the heart's acknowledgment of Allah's favors, the tongue's praise of Him, and the limbs' obedience to Him.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse carries a timeless lesson for you and me. When you find yourself in a position of weakness — few resources, little support, overwhelming odds — remember that Allah's help is not tied to numbers or means. He who granted victory to a handful of unarmed believers at Badr is fully capable of granting you victory over every difficulty you face, whether it is an internal struggle against your own desires, a hardship in your family, or a challenge in your community.

But the condition is clear: taqwa — sincere, consistent mindfulness of Allah. When you obey Him in times of ease, He will be with you in times of hardship. And when you are grateful for the small blessings, He increases you — as He promised: *"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]"* (Ibrahim 14:7).

So let the memory of Badr strengthen your heart. Let it remind you that the Muslim ummah has always risen from weakness to strength when it held firm to Allah's rope. And let this verse be a living call to you: fear Allah in every moment, so that your entire life becomes an expression of shukr (gratitude) — and through that gratitude, you will find victory, peace, and honor in this world and the next.
