Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Ham-mat" (هَمَّتْ): Intended, resolved, or almost decided upon something.
  • "Ta'ifatani" (طَّائِفَتَانِ): Two groups or two parties.
  • "Tafshala" (تَفْشَلَا): To become weak, to lose courage, to retreat out of fear, or to fail in determination.
  • "Waliyyuhuma" (وَلِيُّهُمَا): Their Protector, Helper, and Guardian.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah reminds the believers of a critical moment during the Battle of Uhud, when two specific groups from among the Muslims—the tribe of Banu Salama from the Khazraj and Banu Haritha from the Aws, who formed the two wings of the Muslim army—were on the verge of losing heart. Their resolve nearly crumbled, and they almost turned back and retreated out of fear of facing the enemy, following the footsteps of the hypocrites led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy, who had already withdrawn with his followers.

Yet, despite this moment of human weakness, Allah's mercy and protection encompassed them. He did not abandon them; rather, He strengthened their hearts, kept them firm, and prevented them from falling into that failure. They continued forward with the Prophet (peace be upon him), placing their trust in Allah alone.

The verse then concludes with a profound and timeless principle: "And upon Allah, let the believers rely." This is not just a command for that specific moment—it is a universal call for every believer in every time and place. When fear grips your heart, when the odds seem overwhelming, when your own strength fails you, that is precisely when you must turn to Allah and place your complete trust in Him. He is the Protector of His righteous servants, and He never lets down those who sincerely rely upon Him.

A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:

Dear believer, this verse carries a beautiful and reassuring message for you: your moments of weakness do not define you. Even the companions of the Prophet—the best of generations—experienced near-failure and hesitation. What matters is what you do next. Do you let fear paralyze you, or do you remember that Allah is your Guardian and Helper?

When you place your trust in Allah, you are never truly alone. He sees your struggle, He knows your fears, and He is fully capable of turning your weakness into strength, your hesitation into steadfastness, and your trial into triumph. So, in every difficulty you face—whether in your personal life, your family, or your community—make Allah your refuge. Rely on Him with a heart full of certainty, and you will find that He opens doors you never imagined and grants you a firmness that surpasses your own abilities.

This is the beauty of Islam: it teaches you that true strength does not come from within yourself alone, but from your connection to the Almighty, the All-Powerful, who never abandons those who turn to Him. Let this verse be a source of courage for you, and let your trust in Allah be your shield against every fear.

📜 Verse 120-124 — Aal-Imran

If good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allah, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah is encompassing of what they do.
And [remember] when you, [O Muhammad], left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle [of Uhud] - and Allah is Hearing and Knowing -
When two parties among you were about to lose courage, but Allah was their ally; and upon Allah the believers should rely.
And already had Allah given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were few in number. Then fear Allah; perhaps you will be grateful.
[Remember] when you said to the believers, "Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down?
