  • Ash-shākirīn (الشاكرين): Those who are grateful to Allah, who obey Him and use His blessings in ways that please Him.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse carries a profound message of faith, patience, and sincerity. Allah, the Most High, clarifies that no soul can die except by His permission and decree. Death is not a random event or a matter of chance; rather, it is a written appointment, fixed and recorded by Allah’s eternal knowledge. Every human being has a specific term in this life that neither advances nor delays. This truth should fill the believer’s heart with tranquility and trust in Allah, especially in times of hardship and battle, for no one can die before their time, and no one can outlive their appointed moment.

The verse then directs the believer’s intention and purpose. Whoever seeks, through their deeds, the fleeting rewards of this world—such as wealth, status, or material gains—will receive only what Allah has decreed for them in this life, but they will have no share in the Hereafter. Conversely, whoever seeks the reward of the Hereafter through their obedience and sincere actions, Allah will grant them their full reward in the life to come, while also providing them their worldly sustenance as He has ordained. This is a beautiful balance: Islam does not forbid enjoying the world, but it purifies the heart’s intention to prioritize what is eternal.

This verse was revealed in the context of the Battle of Uhud, where some Muslims left their posts seeking the spoils of war, while others remained steadfast in obedience to their commander. It teaches us that true success lies not in chasing the temporary glitter of this world, but in aligning our hearts with Allah’s pleasure and seeking His eternal reward.

Finally, Allah promises to reward the grateful—those who recognize His blessings, use them in obedience, and remain patient and steadfast in His cause. Their reward is not only in the Hereafter but also in the peace and contentment Allah places in their hearts in this life.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to a life of purpose and sincerity. It reassures you that your provision and your life’s span are already written by Allah, so do not let the fear of poverty or death drive you away from what is right. Instead, purify your intention: when you work, study, help others, or worship, do it for Allah’s sake. If you seek the Hereafter, Allah will not only grant you that noble goal but will also take care of your worldly needs. The grateful ones are those who understand this secret and live with hearts connected to their Creator. Be among them, and you will find a peace that this world’s treasures cannot give. Islam is the path of balance and true success—embrace it with an open heart, and you will taste the sweetness of faith.

📜 Verse 143-147 — Aal-Imran

And you had certainly wished for martyrdom before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on.
Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but Allah will reward the grateful.
And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful.
And how many a prophet [fought and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allah loves the steadfast.
And their words were not but that they said, "Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
