Key Words and Their Meanings:
- يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَا أَتَوا — rejoice in what they have done (i.e., their evil deeds and sins).
- يُحِبُّونَ أَن يُحْمَدُوا — love to be praised and commended.
- بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا — for what they have not actually done (i.e., false praise for deeds they never performed).
- بِمَفَازَةٍ — with safety, deliverance, or escape.
- عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ — a painful, agonizing torment.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, do not think for a moment that those who take delight in their evil deeds — whether they are from the hypocrites, the People of the Book, or anyone else — and who love to be praised by people for virtues they never possessed, are safe from Allah’s punishment. Do not assume that they will escape the divine reckoning. On the contrary, they will face a painful torment in the Hereafter, and in this world they are not secure from Allah’s justice either.
This verse was revealed concerning the hypocrites who would stay behind when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out for battle, and when he returned, they would make excuses and swear false oaths, hoping to be praised for courage and loyalty they never showed. They rejoiced in their deception and loved to be commended for what they had not done.
The verse carries a severe warning for every person who takes pride in wrongdoing, who delights in sin, or who seeks to be praised for good deeds they never performed. It exposes the sickness of the heart that craves false admiration and self-glorification, and it reminds us that Allah’s knowledge encompasses all hidden intentions and outward actions. No one can deceive Allah, and no one can escape His justice.
A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. Purify your intentions, and let your deeds be sincere for Allah alone. Do not chase the applause of people, for their praise is fleeting and often deceptive. Instead, seek the pleasure of your Lord, who sees the unseen and knows what is in the hearts. True success lies not in the admiration of others, but in the acceptance of Allah. Guard your heart from self-admiration and hypocrisy, and strive to be among those who do good sincerely, without seeking reward or recognition from anyone but Allah. For indeed, Allah loves those who are sincere, and He has prepared for them a great reward — while for the boastful and the deceitful, there is a painful torment. May Allah protect us all from the diseases of the heart and grant us sincerity in word and deed.
