Word Meanings:

  • "وآتنا" (and give us): Grant us, bestow upon us.
  • "ما وعدتنا على رسلك" (what You promised us through Your messengers): The blessings, victories, guidance, and rewards that Allah promised to the believers on the tongues of His prophets.
  • "ولا تخزنا" (and do not disgrace us): Do not humiliate us, shame us, or expose us to public disgrace.
  • "يوم القيامة" (on the Day of Resurrection): The Day when all creation will be gathered for judgment.
(You never break Your promise): Allah is absolutely faithful to His covenant and never fails to fulfill what He has pledged.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse is the concluding supplication of the believers, who have just described themselves as those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and who reflect deeply upon the creation of the heavens and the earth, declaring: "Our Lord, You did not create this in vain." Now, they raise their hands in humble prayer, saying:

"Our Lord, grant us what You promised us through Your messengers." This is a comprehensive request that encompasses all the divine promises made to the believers: guidance in this world, victory over falsehood, steadfastness upon the truth, forgiveness of sins, and ultimately, the eternal bliss of Paradise. The believers are not merely asking for worldly gains; they are asking for the fulfillment of every sacred promise that Allah made known through His prophets—from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). This includes the promise of divine support for the righteous, the promise of Paradise for the God-fearing, and the promise of Allah's mercy and pleasure for those who strive in His cause.

"And do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection." This is a plea for protection from the ultimate humiliation—being exposed before all of creation with one's sins, being entered into the Fire, or being turned away from Allah's mercy on that terrifying Day. The believers recognize that their salvation is not guaranteed by their own deeds alone, but by Allah's grace and mercy. They fear that moment when faces will be whitened and faces will be blackened, and they desperately seek to be among those whose faces shine with the light of faith and divine acceptance.

"Indeed, You never break Your promise." This closing statement is both an affirmation of faith and a gentle, loving reminder to Allah—though He needs no reminder—that His perfect nature necessitates the fulfillment of His word. It reflects the believer's absolute certainty in Allah's truthfulness and faithfulness. When Allah promises, He delivers. When He warns, He fulfills. His word is truth, and His covenant is unbreakable. This statement transforms the supplication into a declaration of trust, showing that the believer's hope is firmly anchored in the unchanging character of their Lord.

The repetition of "Our Lord" (Rabbana) throughout this passage demonstrates the depth of the believers' devotion and their persistent, humble approach to their Creator. It is as if they are saying: "You are our Lord, our Nurturer, our Sustainer, our King—so how can You abandon us? How can You leave us to disgrace? You are the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious, and Your mercy encompasses all things."

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear Muslim, this verse teaches us the beautiful art of supplication—how to combine praise of Allah with our requests, how to acknowledge our weakness while affirming His strength, and how to express our fears while holding firm to our hopes. The believers in this verse do not merely ask; they ground their request in the promises of Allah, showing us that we should pray with certainty, not with doubt. When you call upon Allah, remember His promises, recall His past favors upon you, and trust that He will never break His word.

This verse also reminds us that the ultimate success is not in this fleeting world, but in being saved from disgrace on the Day of Judgment. Let this supplication be a constant companion in your daily prayers and your quiet moments of reflection. Repeat it with presence of heart, and you will find peace in knowing that the One who hears you is the One who never fails His promise. May Allah grant us all what He has promised His righteous servants, and may He protect us from disgrace on that momentous Day. Ameen.

📜 Verse 192-196 — Aal-Imran

Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.
Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous.
Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise."
And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allah, and Allah has with Him the best reward."
Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land.
