Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Furqan (الفرقان): The Criterion — that which distinguishes between truth and falsehood, right and wrong. It is another name for the Qur'an itself.
  • Aziz (عزيز): Almighty, Mighty, Invincible — the One who cannot be overpowered or defeated.
  • Dhu Intiqam (ذو انتقام): The Owner of Retribution — the One who punishes severely and justly those who persist in disbelief and wrongdoing.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse continues to address the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers, affirming the divine origin of the Qur'an. Allah states that He has sent down to you, O Prophet, the Book (the Qur'an) with the truth — absolute certainty in its news and perfect justice in its rulings. It confirms and agrees with the divine scriptures that came before it, leaving no contradiction between them, for they all originate from the same source: the wisdom of Allah.

Before the Qur'an, Allah sent down the Torah to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and the Gospel to Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). These scriptures were sent as guidance for humanity — a light to lead people toward faith, righteousness, and the betterment of their religion and worldly affairs. They were a mercy from Allah to those who sought the truth.

Then, Allah mentions the greatest of His revelations: Al-Furqan — the Criterion. This is the Qur'an itself, which distinguishes between truth and falsehood, guidance and misguidance, the lawful and the prohibited. It is mentioned separately and emphatically to honor its supreme status, for it is the final and most complete revelation, superseding all that came before it while confirming the core message of all prophets: the oneness of Allah and submission to His will.

For those who reject the signs of Allah — His verses, His proofs, and His messengers — there awaits a severe punishment. Their denial is not merely an intellectual stance; it is an arrogant turning away from clear evidence and a rejection of the very guidance their own souls yearn for.

And Allah is Al-Aziz, the Almighty, the Invincible — nothing in the heavens or the earth can escape His power or thwart His will. He is Dhu Intiqam, the Owner of Retribution, who punishes those who deny His signs and oppose His messengers. His justice is perfect, and His retribution is a warning to all who persist in arrogance and disbelief.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this verse. The same Allah who revealed the Torah and the Gospel revealed the Qur'an — all of them are links in one continuous chain of divine guidance, culminating in the final message to humanity. The Qur'an is not merely a book to be read; it is a living criterion that separates truth from falsehood in every age and every situation. When you hold the Qur'an, you hold the key to distinguishing right from wrong in a world full of confusion.

Do not be among those who turn away from Allah's signs, for their end is severe. Instead, open your heart to this divine light. Let the Qur'an guide your steps, illuminate your mind, and purify your soul. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open to all who seek Him sincerely. Come to Him before the day when neither wealth nor status will avail, and only faith and good deeds will speak for you. Allah is Mighty, but He is also Most Merciful — and His mercy is far greater than His retribution for those who turn back to Him.
