Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse is a direct address from Allah to Maryam (peace be upon her), the mother of Prophet 'Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him). It calls her to a life of devoted worship and sincere servitude to her Lord. The command begins with *"Uqnuti li Rabbik"* — meaning to remain steadfast in obedience, to lengthen the standing in prayer, and to dedicate oneself fully to Allah with humility and sincerity. This is not merely a momentary act but a continuous state of devotion.
Then Allah commands her: *"Wasjudi warka'i"* — prostrate and bow. The mention of prostration before bowing is noteworthy; it is not a sequence but rather emphasizes the importance of both acts of worship, highlighting the profound humility they represent. Prostration is the pinnacle of a servant's closeness to Allah, and bowing is an expression of reverence and submission.
Finally, Allah says: *"Ma'a ar-raki'in"* — with those who bow. This is a call to pray in congregation, to join the community of believers in their worship. The wording uses the masculine plural form (*ar-raki'in*), which includes both men and women, indicating that the reward and virtue of congregational prayer are not limited by gender. It also teaches us the beauty of unity in worship — that standing shoulder to shoulder in prayer strengthens the bonds of faith and community.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is not only a historical address to Maryam — it is a timeless reminder for every soul that seeks closeness to Allah. Just as Maryam was honored with this divine command, we too are invited to cultivate a life of devotion: to pray with presence of heart, to bow and prostrate with humility, and to never isolate ourselves from the congregation of believers. The mosque is the school of the soul, and congregational prayer is its most beautiful lesson. Let us answer this call with love and eagerness, for in obedience lies true peace, and in worship lies our greatest honor. May Allah make us among those who bow and prostrate to Him alone, and may He unite our hearts in righteousness.
