Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اصطفاكِ (Istafāki): Chose you, selected you, and favored you with a special distinction.
- طهّركِ (Tahharaki): Purified you and cleansed you from all defects, impurities, and shortcomings.
- على نساء العالمين (ʿalā nisāʾ al-ʿālamīn): Above all the women of the worlds—meaning the women of her time and place, and by consensus of scholars, she is the best of all women in her era.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah recounts to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) a moment of great honor and divine grace—a scene from the life of Maryam (Mary), the mother of Prophet ʿĪsā (Jesus, peace be upon him). The angels, by the command of Allah, addressed her with a message of sublime distinction: "O Maryam, indeed Allah has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of the worlds."
This divine selection was not arbitrary; it was a choice based on her profound faith, her unwavering devotion, her chastity, and her complete submission to her Lord. Allah purified her from moral vices, from the stains of sin, and from the physical impurities that afflict women—so much so that she was free from menstruation and postpartum bleeding, as a sign of her unique honor. She was chosen above all the women of her time for a miraculous purpose: to give birth to a prophet without the touch of any man, as a testament to Allah's absolute power and a sign for all humanity.
The repetition of the word "chosen" (اصطفى) twice in this verse emphasizes the greatness of her rank. The first selection points to her being chosen for worship and obedience, and the second highlights her being chosen over all women of her era. This is a profound honor that no other woman in history has received.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder this scene: the angels themselves—pure, noble, and sinless beings—descending to speak with a human woman, conveying to her the highest praise from the Lord of the Worlds. This demonstrates the immense value Allah places on sincere faith and righteous character, regardless of gender or social standing. Maryam was not a queen, not a wealthy woman, and not a scholar by worldly standards—yet she attained a rank that no other woman has ever reached, simply through her devotion, her patience, and her trust in Allah.
This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer, especially women: your worth in the sight of Allah is not measured by wealth, beauty, or social status, but by your piety, your purity of heart, and your obedience to your Creator. Allah honors whom He wills, and He chooses His servants for His mercy based on their inner reality, not their outward appearance.
Let this inspire you to strive for purity in your own life—purity of intention, purity of action, and purity of character. Just as Allah chose Maryam and elevated her, He can elevate you through your sincere faith and righteous deeds. The doors of divine mercy are always open; all you need is to knock with a sincere heart. And remember, the greatest honor is not what people say about you, but what the angels record about you in the presence of Allah.
