Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mutawaffeek (مُتَوَفِّيكَ): This means "I will take you fully" or "I will complete your term." It signifies receiving someone completely, and in this context, it refers to Allah taking Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) up to Him—whether by causing him to sleep and then raising him, or by completing his appointed time on earth before raising him.
- Raafi'uka (رَافِعُكَ): "I will raise you up" — lifting him up to the heavens, to a place of honor and proximity to Allah.
- Mutahhiruka (مُطَهِّرُكَ): "I will purify you" — cleansing him from the filth of disbelief and protecting him from the harm and plots of those who rejected him.
- Alladheena ittaba'ooka (الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوكَ): "Those who followed you" — referring to those who believed in his message of monotheism and followed the truth he brought, including the believers from his time and the followers of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who upheld the same core message of pure monotheism.
- Fawqa (فَوْقَ): "Above" — meaning they will be dominant and victorious over them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse takes us back to a profound moment when Allah addressed Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) directly, reassuring him of His divine plan against the schemes of those who sought to kill him. The disbelievers among the Children of Israel had plotted to crucify him, but Allah turned their plot around and saved His prophet in a miraculous way.
Allah said to Jesus: "O Jesus, indeed I will take you fully and raise you up to Me." This means that Allah protected him from the harm of his enemies. He did not let them kill him or crucify him; rather, He raised him up to the heavens, body and soul, in a state of honor and dignity. Some scholars explain that Allah caused him to sleep and then raised him while asleep, as a sign of His power and mercy. Others mention that his death will occur after he descends at the end of time, and then he will die a natural death like all human beings. Either way, the key point is that Allah saved him from the humiliation of his enemies and elevated him to a station of honor.
Then Allah said: "And I will purify you from those who disbelieved" — meaning He cleansed him from their false accusations, their rejection, and their attempts to harm him. He removed him from their midst and protected him from their evil plots, so that they could not touch him with any harm.
Allah then gave a promise that continues to echo through history: "And I will make those who followed you above those who disbelieved until the Day of Resurrection." This is a divine guarantee that the followers of truth — those who believed in Jesus' message of monotheism and later embraced the final message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — will always have the upper hand over the disbelievers. This victory may come through clear evidence and proof, or through strength and authority in this world, but ultimately it is a promise from Allah that truth prevails over falsehood. The believers who follow the straight path will never be completely subdued by the forces of disbelief, for Allah's word is supreme.
Finally, Allah said: "Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that over which you used to differ." This is a reminder that all disputes — whether about the nature of Jesus, his message, or any other matter of faith — will be settled by Allah on the Day of Judgment. He is the Ultimate Judge, and His judgment is perfect and just. No matter how much people argue or differ in this world, the final word belongs to Allah alone.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a treasure of hope and reassurance for every believer. It teaches us that when we are sincere in our faith and committed to the truth, Allah will never abandon us. Just as He saved His prophet Jesus from the clutches of his enemies, He can save you from whatever trials you face. The plots of the disbelievers may seem strong, but Allah's plan is always greater.
Moreover, this verse reminds us of the beautiful unity of the prophetic message. Jesus (peace be upon him) called people to worship Allah alone, and so did Muhammad (peace be upon him). The true followers of Jesus are those who accepted the final messenger, because the message is one and the same: submission to Allah. This is the essence of Islam — a religion that honors all prophets and calls humanity to the pure worship of the One True God.
So, dear reader, hold on to the rope of Allah. Be among those who follow the truth, for Allah has promised that His believing servants will always be above the disbelievers — not necessarily in wealth or numbers, but in honor, guidance, and ultimate success. And when you face disagreements or confusion in matters of faith, remember that the final judgment belongs to Allah alone. Trust Him, submit to Him, and He will guide you to what is best in this life and the next.
