Word Meanings:

  • Sawwāhu (سَوَّاهُ): Perfected and completed his creation, making it balanced and well-proportioned.
  • Nafakha fīhi min rūḥihi (نَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِ): Breathed into him from His spirit — meaning He granted him the soul, which is a creation exclusively from Allah’s command, and by it the human became alive after being inanimate.
  • Al-Af’idah (الأَفْئِدَةُ): The hearts/minds — the faculty of understanding, reasoning, and discernment.
  • Qalīlan mā tashkurūn (قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ): You show but little gratitude — meaning your thankfulness is scarce and insufficient compared to the immense blessings bestowed upon you.

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning the stages of human creation — from clay, to a drop of fluid, to a clinging clot — Allah now completes the picture of His magnificent craftsmanship. He says: *“Then He perfected him and breathed into him of His spirit.”* This means that Allah, in His infinite wisdom and power, shaped the human being into the most beautiful and balanced form, and then granted him life by breathing into him the soul — a sacred trust from Allah, which transformed a lifeless body into a living, conscious being. This act alone should fill every heart with awe and gratitude, for it demonstrates Allah’s direct involvement in our existence and His immense love for His creation.

Then Allah says: *“And He made for you hearing, sight, and hearts.”* Think deeply about these three gifts. Through hearing, you perceive sounds, words, and the recitation of the Qur’an — the very means by which guidance reaches your soul. Through sight, you observe the wonders of the universe — the skies, the mountains, the oceans, and the faces of your loved ones — all of which point to the greatness of their Creator. Through hearts (minds), you reason, reflect, distinguish between right and wrong, and come to know your Lord. These are not random faculties; they are deliberate gifts from Allah, given so that you may use them to worship Him and live a life of purpose.

Yet, despite all these blessings, Allah says: *“Little is what you thank.”* How true this is! We use our eyes to look at the world but rarely look at the signs of Allah. We use our ears to listen to countless things but seldom listen to the truth with full attention. We use our minds to manage worldly affairs but often neglect to reflect on our Creator and His message. Gratitude is not merely saying “Alhamdulillah” with the tongue; it is using every faculty Allah gave us in ways that please Him. When you see, remember the Creator of sight. When you hear, remember the One who granted you hearing. When you think, let your thoughts lead you closer to Allah.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and consider: you did not create yourself, nor did you give yourself these senses. A blind person would give anything to see, a deaf person would give anything to hear, and a person with a sound mind knows that intelligence is a priceless treasure. Yet here you are — blessed with all of them — and still, how often do you thank the One who gave them to you?

Islam teaches us that gratitude is the key to more blessings. Allah says in the Qur’an: *“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]”* (Ibrahim 14:7). So let this verse be a turning point. Let your eyes shed tears of humility, your ears listen to the Qur’an with presence, and your heart reflect on the greatness of Allah. Make gratitude a lifestyle, not a rare occasion. Thank Allah with your tongue, your limbs, and your heart — and you will find that the more you thank Him, the more He opens doors of goodness for you in this life and the next.

This is the beauty of Islam: it does not merely tell you to believe; it invites you to reflect, to appreciate, and to draw closer to your Creator through every breath you take and every blessing you enjoy. So be among the grateful — for they are the ones who truly succeed.

📜 Verse 7-11 — As-Sajdah

Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay.
Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.
Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.
And they say, "When we are lost within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation?" Rather, they are, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, disbelievers.
Say, "The angel of death will take you who has been entrusted with you. Then to your Lord you will be returned."
