Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يَعْصِمُكُم (ya'simukum): Protects you, shields you, or prevents harm from reaching you.
  • سُوءًا (sū'an): Harm, evil, misfortune, or anything disliked—such as defeat, death, or punishment.
  • رَحْمَةً (rahmah): Mercy, blessing, or goodness—such as safety, victory, or well-being.
  • وَلِيًّا (waliyyan): A close ally, protector, or one who takes charge of your affairs.
  • نَصِيرًا (nasīran): A helper or supporter who comes to your aid and defends you.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, say to these hypocrites and to all who place their trust in false refuges: Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends harm for you—be it defeat in battle, death, or any form of punishment? And who can prevent His mercy from reaching you if He wills goodness, safety, and victory for you? The answer is clear: no one at all. Allah alone is the Giver and the Withholder, the One who harms and the One who benefits. No power, no army, no fortress, and no human strategy can alter His decree.

These hypocrites, who sought to escape jihad and the hardships of battle, imagined that by fleeing they could secure their lives. Yet they failed to realize that no one can shield them from Allah's will. Even if they hid in the most fortified strongholds or fled to the farthest corners of the earth, they would find no guardian to protect them and no helper to rescue them from Allah's command. They will never find, besides Allah, any ally to befriend them or any supporter to defend them against His justice.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: absolute reliance must be placed on Allah alone. Neither fear of harm nor hope for benefit should turn a Muslim away from obedience to Allah. True safety lies not in fleeing from destiny, but in submitting to the will of the Almighty. The believer understands that whatever Allah decrees is ultimately good, and that His mercy is far greater than any harm that may come. So trust in Allah, stand firm in His cause, and know that He is the best of protectors and the most merciful of those who show mercy.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Al-Ahzab

And they had already promised Allah before not to turn their backs and flee. And ever is the promise to Allah [that about which one will be] questioned.
Say, [O Muhammad], "Never will fleeing benefit you if you should flee from death or killing; and then [if you did], you would not be given enjoyment [of life] except for a little."
Say, "Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends for you an ill or intends for you a mercy?" And they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or any helper.
Already Allah knows the hinderers among you and those [hypocrites] who say to their brothers, "Come to us," and do not go to battle, except for a few,
Indisposed toward you. And when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes revolving like one being overcome by death. But when fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, indisposed toward [any] good. Those have not believed, so Allah has rendered their deeds worthless, and ever is that, for Allah, easy.
