Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Al-Firār (الْفِرَارُ): Fleeing, running away, or escaping from a situation (here, from battle).
- Al-Mawt (الْمَوْتِ): Death by natural causes or decree.
- Al-Qatl (الْقَتْلِ): Being killed, slain, or dying by the sword in battle.
- Tumatta‘ūn (تُمَتَّعُونَ): You will be given enjoyment, pleasure, or a brief respite in life.
- Qalīlan (قَلِيلًا): A little, a short while, a brief and insignificant period.
The Interpretation:
O Prophet, say clearly to those hypocrites and faint-hearted ones who seek to avoid the battlefield out of fear: "Fleeing will never benefit you, even if you run away from death or from being killed in combat." Why? Because your appointed time (ajal) is already written and decreed by Allah. No matter where you hide, no matter how fast you run, the moment of your death will not be delayed by a single breath, nor will it be brought forward. If it is not yet your time to die, then you will survive the battle — but what then? Even if you escape today, you will only be granted a brief, fleeting enjoyment of this worldly life until your appointed term catches up with you. And that remaining span, no matter how long it may seem, is utterly insignificant when compared to the eternal life of the Hereafter.
So do not let the love of this world deceive you, and do not think that running away from hardship will save you. The believer’s true honor lies in obedience to Allah and His Messenger, in standing firm for the truth, and in trusting that whatever Allah has decreed is best. The coward who flees gains nothing but a few extra days of anxiety and fear, while the brave believer who faces death with faith and courage attains either victory in this world or the supreme reward of martyrdom in the next. Which of the two is truly the wiser choice? Indeed, the wise one is he who prepares for the eternal life, not the one who clings to a fleeting shadow.
This verse is a powerful reminder that our lives are in Allah’s hands alone. So, dear reader, do not waste your energy on fear of death or worry about tomorrow. Instead, invest your time in what truly matters: sincere faith, good deeds, and pleasing your Lord. For the Hereafter is the real life, and this world is nothing but a short journey — so make that journey count.
