Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Subḥānaka (سُبْحَانَكَ): Glory be to You; declaration of Allah's absolute perfection and transcendence above any flaw or deficiency.
- Walīyunā (وَلِيُّنَا): Our Protector, Guardian, and the One Whom we take as our ally and obey.
- Min dūnihim (مِن دُونِهِم): Other than them; excluding them.
- Al-Jinn (الْجِنَّ): Here referring to the devils (shayāṭīn) among the jinn, who misled the polytheists.
- Mu'minūn (مُؤْمِنُونَ): Believers; those who affirm and accept something as true.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On the Day of Judgment, when Allah asks the angels whether they were worshipped by people, the angels will declare their complete innocence and disassociation from such false worship. They will say: "Glory be to You, O Allah! You are far above having any partner or associate in worship. You alone are our Protector and the One Whom we obey and turn to — not them. We have no connection or alliance with those who worshipped us."
Then they will clarify the reality of what happened: "Rather, those polytheists were not truly worshipping us at all — they were worshipping the devils among the jinn." How so? Because the devils beautified the worship of angels in their eyes, commanded them to do so, and deceived them into believing that angels were daughters of Allah. The polytheists obeyed the devils and followed their false suggestions, and most of them believed in the devils and trusted their lies — including the claim that angels were female deities worthy of worship.
This verse carries a profound lesson for humanity: false worship always traces back to the whispers of Shayṭān. The devils are the real force behind every form of shirk (associating partners with Allah). They deceive people through false beliefs, empty rituals, and misguided traditions — just as they deceived the Arabs of old who claimed to worship angels but were in reality obeying the devils.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how the angels — the very beings some people worshipped — will disown their worshippers on the Day of Judgment! No intercession, no help, no friendship will exist between them. This teaches us a timeless truth: nothing and no one deserves our worship except Allah alone. Every act of devotion directed to other than Him — whether to angels, saints, idols, or any created being — is ultimately a victory for Shayṭān, who loves nothing more than to see human beings bow to anything other than their Creator.
So purify your heart and your worship for Allah alone. He is the Only One Who hears your prayers, answers your calls, and protects you in times of need. Turn to Him with sincerity, and you will find a Guardian Who never abandons His servants — unlike the false objects of worship that will flee from their followers on the Day when all is revealed.
