Key Words and Phrases:
- "Kutub" (كُتُب): Books or scriptures.
- "Yadrusunaha" (يَدْرُسُونَهَا): They study or read them repeatedly.
- "Nadheer" (نَذِير): A warner, a messenger who warns people of divine punishment.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers of Makkah who rejected the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and accused him of bringing sorcery or fabrications. Allah refutes their claims by stating a simple, undeniable truth: He did not send them any previous scriptures that they could study and use as a basis to judge the Qur'an as false. Nor did He send them any warner before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who could have foretold his coming or warned them of the consequences of disbelief.
This verse highlights that the Arabs of that time had no divine book, no revealed scripture, and no prophet sent specifically to them before Muhammad (peace be upon him). The only prophet sent to their ancestors was Prophet Isma'il (peace be upon him), but he was sent long before, and no ongoing revelation remained with them. Therefore, their rejection of the Qur'an was not based on knowledge or evidence from any prior revelation—it was pure stubbornness and arrogance.
The verse also carries a profound lesson: the disbelievers had no legitimate ground to deny the truth. They were not people of scripture who could claim that their books contradicted the Qur'an. They were an unlettered nation (Ummiyyin), and the coming of a prophet to them was a great mercy from Allah. Instead of embracing this mercy, they met it with denial and hostility.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every reader to reflect on the immense blessing of the Qur'an. The Arabs of that time had no book to guide them, yet Allah sent them the greatest of all scriptures—a book that is preserved, studied, and recited by millions to this day. If they had no basis to reject it, then we, who have access to this divine light, should hold fast to it with gratitude and reverence.
The message is clear: when the truth comes from Allah, there is no excuse for turning away. The Qur'an is not a human invention; it is the word of the Creator, sent as a mercy to all of humanity. Let us open our hearts to it, study it, and live by it, for it is the ultimate guide to success in this life and the Hereafter. And let us thank Allah for sending us the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), who came as a warner and a bearer of glad tidings, leading us from darkness into light.
