Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • M'i'shar (مِعْشَار): One-tenth (a tenth part).
  • Nakeer (نَكِير): My disapproval, denial, and the severe punishment that follows.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Before the people of Makkah, many nations denied the messengers of Allah—like 'Ad, Thamud, the people of Ibrahim, and the people of Lut. These past nations were given immense strength, abundant wealth, long lives, and great power—blessings far beyond what the disbelievers of Quraysh ever possessed. In fact, the Quraysh did not even reach one-tenth of what those nations were given in terms of worldly might and prosperity.

Yet, despite all that power and provision, those nations still rejected the messengers who came to them with clear signs. They opposed the truth out of arrogance and stubbornness. So what happened to them? Allah's punishment descended upon them, and all their wealth, numbers, and strength could not protect them in the least. Their power became their ruin, and their denial became the cause of their destruction.

Now, Allah turns to the disbelievers of Makkah and warns them through this powerful lesson: if the mighty nations of the past—who were far stronger and richer than you—could not escape Allah's punishment when they denied His messengers, then how do you expect to fare? You are weaker, fewer, and less equipped. So reflect: how severe was My disapproval and how terrible was My punishment for those who came before!

This verse is a profound call to reflection. It teaches us that worldly power, wealth, and numbers are not what save a people—rather, it is faith, obedience, and following the truth. The nations of old had everything you can imagine, yet their denial brought them to utter ruin. So let this be a warning and a lesson: do not be deceived by what you have in this world, and do not reject the truth that has come to you. The punishment of Allah is severe, and His disapproval is not to be taken lightly. But for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there is mercy, forgiveness, and a great reward that never ends.

📜 Verse 43-47 — Saba

And when our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, they say, "This is not but a man who wishes to avert you from that which your fathers were worshipping." And they say, "This is not except a lie invented." And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is not but obvious magic."
And We had not given them any scriptures which they could study, and We had not sent to them before you, [O Muhammad], any warner.
And those before them denied, and the people of Makkah have not attained a tenth of what We had given them. But the former peoples denied My messengers, so how [terrible] was My reproach.
Say, "I only advise you of one [thing] - that you stand for Allah, [seeking truth] in pairs and individually, and then give thought." There is not in your companion any madness. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment.
Say, "Whatever payment I might have asked of you - it is yours. My payment is only from Allah, and He is, over all things, Witness."
