Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nakhsif (نَخْسِفَ): To cause the earth to swallow or sink something beneath its surface.
- Kisafan (كِسَفًا): Pieces or fragments; here referring to chunks or portions of the sky/heaven falling down.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have these disbelievers, who deny the Resurrection and the Hereafter, not looked with insight at what surrounds them—the sky above their heads and the earth beneath their feet? Do they not reflect on the immense power of Allah that encompasses them from every direction? The heavens and the earth are not mere decorations; they are constant witnesses to His might and control over all creation.
If Allah willed, He could command the earth to swallow them whole, just as it swallowed Qarun (Korah) for his arrogance and rebellion. And if He willed, He could rain down upon them pieces of torment from the sky, just as He did to the people of Shu'ayb when they were destroyed by a painful punishment. The One who holds the heavens and the earth in His grasp is fully capable of doing all of this—and He is equally capable of bringing the dead back to life and resurrecting them for accountability.
Indeed, in this reminder of Allah's absolute power lies a clear and decisive sign for every servant who turns back to his Lord in repentance, who acknowledges His oneness with sincerity, and who devotes himself wholly to worshipping Him. Such a servant looks at the universe and sees not just physical phenomena, but the fingerprints of his Creator—and this sight fills his heart with awe, humility, and love for Allah.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
O beloved reader! Look around you at the vast sky stretched above and the firm earth beneath your feet. Every sunrise and sunset, every mountain and ocean, every breath you take—all of it speaks of a Creator who is alive, powerful, and ever-watchful. If He can hold the universe in perfect order, can He not also bring you back after death? Can He not also hold you accountable for your deeds?
This verse is a gentle yet firm invitation: return to your Lord before it is too late. The door of repentance is open, and Allah loves those who turn back to Him with a sincere heart. Do not wait until the earth swallows you or the sky falls upon you—come to Him now, in humility and love, and you will find Him merciful, forgiving, and ready to welcome you. For the One who created you is the One who knows your every need, and His mercy encompasses all things.
