Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Aftara (أَفْتَرَىٰ): To fabricate or invent a lie.
- Jinnah (جِنَّةٌ): Madness or insanity.
- Al-ʿAdhāb (الْعَذَابِ): The severe punishment.
- Aḍ-Ḍalāl al-Baʿīd (الضَّلَالِ الْبَعِيدِ): The far-reaching error and misguidance from the truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their stubbornness and denial, questioned the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with two false accusations: "Has this man fabricated a lie against Allah, or is he possessed by madness?" They could not accept that a human being would receive revelation, so they resorted to these baseless claims. Yet, the Qur’an refutes their words decisively: the Prophet (peace be upon him) is neither a liar nor insane—he is the most truthful of all creation, delivering the pure message of his Lord.
The verse then turns the accusation back upon them, revealing the true state of affairs: "But those who do not believe in the Hereafter are in punishment and far-reaching error." This means that the real calamity is not with the Prophet, but with those who reject the resurrection and the Day of Judgment. They are trapped in a twofold misery: in this world, they wander in profound misguidance, far from the path of truth and wisdom; and in the Hereafter, they will face an everlasting torment because they refused to prepare for that inevitable meeting with their Creator.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the denial of the Hereafter is not merely an intellectual stance—it is the root of all spiritual ruin. When a person loses faith in accountability before Allah, they lose the compass that guides their actions, and they fall into the darkness of confusion and despair. But for those who believe, the Hereafter is a source of hope and purpose, motivating them to do good, seek forgiveness, and draw closer to their Lord.
O servant of Allah, let this verse awaken your heart! Do not be like those who saw the clear truth yet turned away, accusing the truthful messenger of lies and madness. Rather, embrace the message of the Qur’an with certainty, for it is the light that dispels all darkness. Believe in the Hereafter, work for it sincerely, and you will find, by Allah’s mercy, that the punishment and error you feared will be replaced with eternal bliss and the pleasure of your Lord. Indeed, Allah is the Most Merciful, and He calls you to success in this life and the next.
