Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ya hasrata (يَا حَسْرَةً): An expression of intense regret, remorse, and anguish. It is a cry of overwhelming sorrow over a missed opportunity or a grave loss.
  • Ala al-ibad (عَلَى الْعِبَادِ): Upon the servants — referring here to the disbelieving servants who brought this regret upon themselves.
  • Yastahzi'un (يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ): They mock, ridicule, and scoff at something or someone.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse paints a vivid and heart-wrenching picture of the Day of Judgment. Allah Almighty says: "Alas for the servants! Never did a Messenger come to them but they used to mock him."

The phrase "Ya hasrata" is a cry of profound regret and bitter remorse. On the Day of Resurrection, when the disbelievers witness the reality of the punishment and see with their own eyes the truth of what the Messengers had warned them about, a wave of unbearable sorrow will wash over them. They will slap their hands in anguish and say, "Oh, what a great loss we have suffered! If only we had believed!"

Why this intense regret? Because their entire attitude in this worldly life was one of arrogance and mockery. Whenever a Messenger of Allah came to them with guidance, truth, and mercy — whether it was a prophet sent to their own people or a final Messenger to all of humanity — their response was not to listen, not to reflect, but to ridicule and scoff. They mocked the Messenger's character, his message, his followers, and even the promises of Paradise and Hellfire.

The verse highlights a tragic pattern: the more sincere and truthful the Messenger, the more intense was the mockery from his people. This was the case with Prophet Nuh, Prophet Hud, Prophet Salih, Prophet Musa, and ultimately Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Quraysh, in particular, are directly addressed here, as they too responded to the Prophet's call with jest and scorn.

The deep lesson for us is this: mockery of divine truth is a dangerous disease of the heart. It stems from arrogance, heedlessness, and a refusal to submit to Allah. Those who mock the truth in this life will taste the bitterness of regret in the next — a regret that will be of no benefit to them whatsoever.

Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet firm wake-up call. It invites us to examine our own hearts: Do we treat the words of Allah and the teachings of His Messenger with reverence and humility? Or do we, in our moments of weakness, allow ourselves to belittle or jest about matters of faith?

The Qur'an is not a book to be mocked or taken lightly — it is a mercy, a healing, and a guide. Every verse that reaches you is an opportunity to draw closer to your Creator. Do not let yourself be among those who, when the truth is presented to them, turn away with a sneer. Instead, be among those who receive the Message with an open heart, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever Allah wishes good for, He grants him understanding (fiqh) in the religion."

Let this verse be a reminder that the messengers came only with what is good for humanity. Their call was one of salvation, success, and eternal bliss. So respond to that call with love, with sincerity, and with action — before the Day comes when regret will be of no avail, and when every soul will cry out, "Alas for what I neglected in the life of Allah!" (Az-Zumar 39:56). May Allah protect us all from the fate of the mockers and grant us the sweetness of faith in this life and the next. Ameen.

📜 Verse 28-32 — Yasin

And We did not send down upon his people after him any soldiers from the heaven, nor would We have done so.
It was not but one shout, and immediately they were extinguished.
How regretful for the servants. There did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him.
Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them will not return?
And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.
