Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyah — A sign, evidence, or proof of Allah's power and mercy.
- Dhurriyyatahum — Their offspring; here it refers to the ancestors of the Quraysh (and all of humanity) who were carried in the ark, meaning their forefathers who survived the flood.
- Al-Fulk — The ship; specifically, the Ark of Prophet Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him.
- Al-Mashhūn — Filled to capacity; loaded with all kinds of creatures, pairs of every species.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, presents another profound sign of His oneness and His boundless mercy toward His creation. He reminds humanity that He is the One who carried the descendants of Adam — specifically, the believing ancestors of the Quraysh and of all people — aboard the Ark of Nuh, peace be upon him. That vessel was filled to its brim with pairs of every living creature, preserving life on earth after the great flood that destroyed the disbelievers. Those who were saved in that ark became the forefathers of all humanity that came after them, and from their loins sprang the generations that exist today. This act alone is a magnificent proof that Allah alone is worthy of worship, for He alone controls the forces of nature, saves whom He wills, and destroys whom He wills. He is the true Provider and Sustainer, the One who turns the tide of events for the benefit of His righteous servants.
Reflection and Da'wah:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. The very ship that carried your ancestors through a catastrophic flood was not a coincidence — it was a deliberate act of divine mercy. Allah did not have to save anyone, but He chose to save the believers and their lineage out of His infinite kindness. Today, you exist because of that mercy. You breathe, you walk, you live — all because Allah preserved your forefathers through that storm. So, how can a heart that recognizes this truth turn away from its Creator? How can a tongue that speaks of gratitude deny the One who carried your own bloodline through the waves? Let this sign awaken your soul: if Allah could save your ancestors from drowning, He can surely save you from the storms of this life and the Hereafter — if you turn to Him in sincerity. The Ark of Nuh was a means of physical salvation; the Ark of Islam is a means of spiritual salvation. Board it with faith, and you will reach the shore of eternal peace.
