Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sayḥah (صَيْحَةً): A single, overwhelming blast or cry — here referring to the first trumpet blast (Nafkhat al-Fazaʿ) that announces the Hour.
- Yakhiṣṣimūn (يَخِصِّمُونَ): Engaged in disputes, arguments, or worldly preoccupations — from the root "khaṣm" meaning contention or conflict.
Tafsir (Explanation):
These disbelievers, who mockingly hasten the punishment and deny the resurrection, are waiting for nothing but a single, terrifying blast — the first trumpet call that will seize them suddenly while they are utterly absorbed in their worldly squabbles and daily affairs. They will be caught mid-argument, mid-transaction, mid-conversation — with no chance to prepare, repent, or even utter a final word. This verse paints a vivid picture of the suddenness of the Hour: people will be bargaining in the marketplace, quarrelling over disputes, tending to their livestock, or laughing with companions — and then, in the blink of an eye, everything stops. The blast will not give them a moment's warning; it will overtake them in the very midst of their heedlessness, leaving no time for a final declaration of faith or a last act of goodness.
This is a profound reminder for every soul: death and the Hour do not announce their arrival. The One who created time itself is not bound by it, and His command comes instantly. How many of us are caught up in arguments over worldly matters — wealth, status, opinions — while the greater reality looms ever closer? The verse calls us to awaken from our negligence, to prioritise what truly matters, and to live in a state of readiness, for the trumpet may sound at any moment, and we will be taken exactly where we stand — in our homes, our workplaces, our moments of joy or anger.
Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah has not left us without guidance. He has sent the Qur'an, the Prophets, and countless signs to prepare us for that inevitable meeting. This verse is not a threat of despair but a loving call to return before that blast — to mend our relationships, to seek forgiveness, and to anchor our hearts in the remembrance of our Creator. The believer who lives with awareness of that Day finds peace in every moment, for they know that the true life is yet to come, and that this world is but a fleeting station on the journey to eternity. Let us not be among those who are taken while arguing over the perishable, but rather among those who are found in prostration, in gratitude, and in love for their Lord.
