Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Ifk" (إفك): A lie, falsehood, or slander; specifically, a fabricated statement that is utterly baseless and turned away from the truth.
  • "La-yaqūlūn" (لَيَقُولُونَ): They certainly say — emphasizing that this is their persistent, deliberate claim.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah exposes the falsehood of the polytheists with a powerful declaration: "Surely, it is out of their own fabrication that they say..." — meaning that their claim about Allah is not based on any knowledge, revelation, or sound reasoning. It is purely a product of their own invented lies. The verse continues in the following one to clarify what exactly they say: that Allah has begotten a son (as they claimed about the angels, calling them daughters of Allah).

This statement is a severe slander against Allah, for He is far above and beyond any need for offspring. He is the Creator of all things, the Self-Sufficient, the Eternal, and nothing resembles Him in any way. The polytheists, in their ignorance and arrogance, attributed to Allah something that contradicts His very nature and majesty. They said what they did not know, and they had no proof whatsoever for such a claim. Their words were empty, baseless, and driven by blind imitation of their forefathers rather than by truth.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse invites every believer to stand in awe of Allah's perfection. How could the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of all existence, need a child? Such a notion is not only illogical but also diminishes the greatness of Allah. Islam teaches us to know Allah through His beautiful names and attributes — He is Al-Ahad (The One), As-Samad (The Self-Sufficient), and He neither begets nor is born.

Let this verse be a reminder for us to purify our belief and to guard our tongues from saying anything about Allah without knowledge. The polytheists fell into this grave error because they followed their desires and inherited falsehood. As Muslims, we are called to follow the truth that has come to us through the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and to submit fully to Allah's perfection. When we truly understand who Allah is, our hearts fill with love, reverence, and gratitude — and we are saved from the darkness of falsehood into the light of true faith. Praise be to Allah, who has guided us to this straight path and protected us from the lies of those who slander His majesty.
