Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Walada Allah" (وَلَدَ اللَّهُ): "Allah has begotten a son" — this is their false claim, as they said the angels are Allah's daughters.
- "Wa-innahum la-kadhiboon" (وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ): "And indeed, they are certainly liars" — a decisive affirmation of their falsehood in this claim.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse exposes one of the most severe fabrications of the polytheists of Makkah: their claim that Allah has offspring. They said, "The angels are Allah's daughters," attributing to Him a child — a notion utterly devoid of truth and reason. The verse responds with a categorical negation: "And indeed, they are certainly liars."
Their lie is manifold: they attribute to Allah what does not befit His majesty, for He is the One, the Self-Sufficient, Who neither begets nor is born, and there is none comparable to Him. They also speak without knowledge, inventing claims about the unseen with no evidence or revelation. The Qur'an elsewhere refutes this by stating that if Allah had willed to take a son, He would have chosen what He pleased — but glory be to Him, He is far above what they ascribe.
This verse is a powerful reminder of the purity of Islamic monotheism (Tawheed). It calls upon every believer to protect their heart and tongue from attributing any imperfection to Allah, and to stand firm in the belief that Allah is unique in His essence, attributes, and actions. The lie of the polytheists was not merely a verbal error — it was a distortion of the very concept of divinity, reducing the Creator to the level of creation.
Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is the Qur'an in defending the honor of Allah! It does not leave falsehood unchallenged, but meets it with clarity and certainty. As Muslims, we are honored to carry this pure message — a message that frees the mind from superstition and the heart from blind imitation. When you say "Laa ilaaha illa Allah" (there is no god but Allah), you are affirming the very truth that the polytheists denied: that Allah is One, without partner, without offspring, and without equal. Let this verse strengthen your conviction and fill you with gratitude that Allah has guided you to the straight path — a path of knowledge, sincerity, and liberation from every false claim. And let it remind you to always speak about Allah with the utmost respect and knowledge, for He is worthy of all praise and far above anything they ascribe to Him.
