Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Nazarah" (نَظْرَةً): A single, deliberate glance or look.
  • "Fi al-Nujum" (فِي النُّجُومِ): At the stars — meaning he cast his eyes toward the sky, contemplating the stars.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes a pivotal moment in the life of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him), a moment of profound wisdom and strategic thinking in the service of his mission. His people were stargazers and astrologers, and they had prepared to leave their town to attend a festival of their idols. They invited Ibrahim to join them, but he had a greater plan — he intended to stay behind and destroy their false gods.

So, Ibrahim looked up at the sky and cast a thoughtful, deliberate glance at the stars. This was not a look of mere wonder or curiosity; it was a calculated move. He pretended to read the stars as they did, giving them the impression that he was consulting the very science they revered. By doing so, he created a plausible excuse to remain behind: he implied that the stars indicated he was falling ill. He then said to them, "Indeed, I am sick" (as mentioned in the following verse). This was a tactful, indirect excuse — a form of *ma'arid* (indirect speech) — which is permissible and even praiseworthy when used to achieve a righteous goal without lying outright.

The wisdom here is remarkable: Ibrahim did not openly confront his people or argue with them at that moment. Instead, he used their own beliefs and practices to buy himself the freedom he needed to carry out his mission. He knew that if he went with them, he would miss the opportunity to smash the idols and demonstrate their powerlessness. So, with a single glance at the stars, he turned their invitation into his advantage.

This scene teaches us profound lessons:

  1. Strategic thinking in calling to Allah: The path of truth often requires wisdom and tact. A believer should use every lawful means to advance the cause of monotheism and righteousness, even if it means employing indirect approaches when direct confrontation is not beneficial.
  2. The power of intention: Ibrahim's glance was not an act of astrology or belief in the stars' influence; it was a clever ruse. His heart was pure, his intention was noble, and his action was a means to a greater end. This shows that the value of an action lies in the intention behind it.
  3. Trust in Allah's plan: Ibrahim was alone against a whole society, yet he did not despair. He used his God-given intellect and remained confident that Allah would support him. Indeed, Allah honored him and made him a leader for all of humanity.

Dear reader, look at how Allah praises His beloved Prophet Ibrahim in the Qur'an, calling him *"Hanifan Musliman"* (upright and submitting to Allah). This story is a beacon of light for every believer: it shows that even in the face of overwhelming odds, one person armed with faith, wisdom, and sincerity can change the course of history. Let us draw inspiration from Ibrahim's courage and cleverness, and let us always remember that Allah is with those who strive in His cause. May we, like Ibrahim, use every opportunity to serve our Creator and spread the message of truth with wisdom and grace.
