Word Meanings:
- Khazāʾin (خَزَائِنُ): Treasures, storehouses, or depositories of wealth and provisions.
- Rahmah (رَحْمَةِ): Mercy, grace, or favour.
- Al-ʿAzīz (الْعَزِيزِ): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One who prevails over all and cannot be overcome.
- Al-Wahhāb (الْوَهَّابِ): The Bestower, the One who gives freely and generously without limit or condition.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse poses a rhetorical question to those who rejected the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and denied the message of truth. It challenges their arrogance and false sense of control: "Do they possess the treasures of the mercy of your Lord, the Almighty, the Bestower?"
The meaning is clear: Do these disbelievers hold the keys to Allah’s grace and favour, such that they can decide who receives prophethood, guidance, or provision? Do they have the authority to grant or withhold the blessings of Allah as they please?
The answer, of course, is an emphatic no. The treasures of Allah’s mercy are entirely in His hands alone. He is Al-ʿAzīz—the Almighty whose power no one can challenge or resist—and Al-Wahhāb—the One who bestows His gifts, including prophethood, wisdom, and sustenance, upon whomever He wills, out of His infinite wisdom and grace. No one can intercept His mercy, and no one can dictate whom He chooses to honour with His message.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder to all of humanity: Allah’s mercy is not a commodity that any human being can control or distribute. The disbelievers of Makkah were astonished that the final revelation was sent to a man from among themselves, rather than to a prominent or wealthy figure of their choosing. In response, Allah asks them, in effect: "Who are you to decide where My mercy should be placed? Do you own the storehouses of My grace?"
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every soul to recognise the absolute sovereignty of Allah and to submit to His divine wisdom. It humbles the proud and reassures the sincere believer: the mercy of Allah is vast, and His generosity knows no bounds. He gives to whom He loves, and He withholds from whom He wills, always with perfect justice and wisdom.
So, turn to your Lord with humility, and do not envy others for what Allah has granted them. Instead, ask Him directly from His boundless treasures, for He is the One who opens His doors of mercy to those who call upon Him sincerely. Indeed, the greatest treasure of all is the guidance of Islam and the honour of being chosen to carry His message—a blessing that no wealth or status can ever rival. Let this verse deepen your trust in Allah’s plan and increase your love for the One who gives without measure, the Almighty, the Bestower.
