Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • مُلْكُ (Mulk): Ownership, dominion, or sovereignty.
  • فَلْيَرْتَقُوا (Falyartaqū): Let them ascend or climb up.
  • الْأَسْبَابِ (Al-Asbāb): The means, pathways, or routes (often referring to the celestial routes or cords leading to the heavens).

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse poses a rhetorical, challenging question to the disbelievers of Makkah who rejected the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and denied the revelation sent down to him. They arrogantly asked: "Why was this Qur'an not sent down to a great man from the two cities (Makkah and Ta'if)?" — implying that they deserved the prophethood or that they could decide who should receive it.

Allah responds by questioning their very claim to authority: "Or do they have the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them?" — meaning, if they truly possess such sovereignty, then they would have the right to give and withhold, to choose whom to honor with revelation, and to govern the affairs of creation as they please. But this is an impossibility, for they own nothing; all dominion belongs to Allah alone.

Then comes the sarcastic, challenging command: "Then let them ascend by the means!" — i.e., if they truly claim such power, let them climb up the ropes, cords, or pathways that lead to the heavens, and let them bring down revelation themselves for whomever they choose! Let them try to reach the Throne of Allah and seize authority — but they will never be able to do so, for they are weak, powerless creatures confined to the earth.

This verse exposes the absurdity of their claims and humiliates their arrogance. It reminds every reader that sovereignty over the universe belongs exclusively to Allah — the Creator, the Owner, and the Disposer of all affairs. He alone decides who receives His mercy, His revelation, and His guidance. No human being, no matter how powerful, wealthy, or influential, has any share in that divine authority.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: never let pride and arrogance blind you to your true position. The disbelievers of Makkah thought themselves great because of their wealth and status, yet they could not even control the rain that fell from the sky or the breath in their own lungs. How then could they claim authority over the heavens and the earth?

As believers, this verse invites us to humility and submission. If all dominion belongs to Allah, then our duty is not to compete with His decree, but to submit to His will, follow His guidance, and trust His wisdom. The Qur'an is not a human choice — it is a divine gift. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was not chosen by people — he was chosen by Allah, the All-Wise, who knows best where to place His message.

So let us thank Allah for His mercy in sending us this guidance, and let us hold fast to it with gratitude and humility. For the One who owns the heavens and the earth has chosen to speak to us — and that is the greatest honor any soul can ever receive.
