Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "حَقَّ عَلَيْهِ" — was decreed and firmly established against him.
- "كَلِمَةُ الْعَذَابِ" — the word of punishment, i.e., the divine decree that he is destined for the Fire.
- "تُنقِذُ" — to save or rescue.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and, through him, all who carry the message of truth. Allah asks a profound rhetorical question: Can you, O Messenger, guide or rescue someone upon whom the word of punishment has already been decreed?
The "word of punishment" refers to Allah's prior decree against those who persist in disbelief, arrogance, and stubborn rejection of the truth until the very end. For such people, no matter how hard you try, their fate is sealed — not because Allah is unjust, but because they chose blindness over sight, and hardness of heart over softness. They were given countless chances, yet they turned away.
The verse then poses an even more striking question: "Can you save those who are already in the Fire?" This is a rhetorical question that affirms the impossibility. No human being — not even the Prophet himself — has the power to alter Allah's decree or to snatch a soul from the flames once judgment has been passed. Guidance is solely in Allah's hands; He grants it to whom He wills and withholds it from whom He wills, in perfect wisdom.
There is a profound lesson here for every believer and caller to Islam. Your duty is only to convey the message with sincerity, wisdom, and beautiful preaching. You are not responsible for the outcomes. Do not exhaust yourself in grief or frustration over those who reject the truth despite all evidence. Their affair is with Allah alone.
At the same time, this verse carries a gentle, loving reassurance: the Prophet's concern for his people was so deep that he wished to save them all from the Fire. But Allah reminds him — and us — that salvation is not by human effort alone; it is by Allah's grace, and His grace is attained through sincere faith and righteous deeds.
So, dear reader, let this verse awaken in you a sense of urgency: do not wait until the decree is sealed upon you. Turn to Allah now, while the door of repentance is open, while your heart is still beating, and while you have the power to choose. For on that Day, no intercessor can save you if you have turned away from your Lord. But today — this very moment — His mercy is closer to you than your own jugular vein. Seize it before it is too late.
