- Kāfin (كَافٍ): Sufficient, enough, or fully capable of taking care of someone’s affairs.
- Yukhawwifūnaka (يُخَوِّفُونَكَ): They frighten you or make you fear.
- Min dūnihi (مِن دُونِهِ): Those besides Him — i.e., the false deities and idols worshipped instead of Allah.
- Yuḍlil (يُضْلِلْ): To lead astray, to leave someone without guidance due to their own choice of misguidance.
- Hād (هَادٍ): A guide, one who leads to the right path.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most Merciful, poses a rhetorical question to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to all believers: "Is not Allah sufficient for His servant?" The question is framed in a way that demands an affirmative answer — of course, He is! This is a powerful reminder that Allah alone is enough to protect, provide for, and defend His sincere servants. He takes care of both their religious and worldly affairs, and He repels every harm that enemies may plot against them.
The verse then addresses the reality of the Prophet’s situation: the disbelievers, out of their ignorance and foolishness, tried to frighten him with their idols and false gods. They would say, "We fear that these deities will harm you or drive you mad if you continue to call to the worship of Allah alone." But what a weak and baseless threat! How can lifeless stones or powerless statues cause any harm? Allah exposes their empty scare tactics, reassuring His Messenger that such threats are meaningless, for true power and harm and benefit lie solely in Allah’s hands.
Then comes a profound truth: "And whoever Allah leaves astray, for him there is no guide." This means that if Allah, in His perfect justice, abandons someone to their own stubborn misguidance because they rejected the truth after it became clear to them, then no one — no idol, no human, no force — can ever bring that person back to the right path. Guidance is entirely in Allah’s hands; He grants it to whom He wills out of His wisdom and mercy, and withholds it from whom He wills out of His justice.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse fill your heart with tranquility and unshakable trust in Allah. If you are a sincere servant of Allah, striving to follow His path, then know that He is more than enough for you. No matter how many people try to intimidate you — whether with mockery, threats, or worldly pressures — their words are like whispers in the wind. Allah is your Protector, your Sufficer, and your Defender.
This verse also invites you to reflect on the source of true security. The disbelievers of Makkah placed their trust in idols that could neither benefit nor harm. Yet you, as a believer, are called to place your trust in the Creator of the heavens and the earth — the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is. Is there any comparison between the two?
So hold firmly to your faith, and never let the threats of others shake your certainty. And if you ever feel lost or uncertain, turn to Allah in humility, for He is the only One who can guide hearts and set them straight. Seek Him, love Him, and rely on Him — and you will find that He is indeed sufficient for you in every way.
