Word Meanings:

  • Sū’an (سُوءًا): An evil or bad deed, whether in word or action, that harms others or violates divine commands.
  • Yaẓlimu nafsahu (يَظْلِمْ نَفْسَهُ): To wrong oneself by committing sins that transgress the limits set by Allah, whether in matters between the servant and his Lord or in harming one’s own soul through disobedience.
  • Yastaghfir (يَسْتَغْفِرِ): To seek forgiveness from Allah with sincere repentance, acknowledging one’s sin, feeling remorse, and resolving to abandon it.
  • Ghafūr (غَفُورًا): The One Who forgives repeatedly and abundantly, covering sins and overlooking faults.
  • Raḥīm (رَحِيمًا): The Most Merciful, Who shows compassion and kindness to His servants, especially those who turn back to Him.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse opens a door of immense hope and mercy for every servant of Allah, no matter how great their sins may be. Allah, the Exalted, declares that whoever commits an evil deed—whether it harms others in their life, wealth, or honor—or wrongs themselves by falling into disobedience and violating Allah’s commands, and then sincerely seeks Allah’s forgiveness, turning back to Him with a repentant heart, acknowledging their fault, feeling deep regret, and resolving to leave the sin behind—will find Allah ever ready to forgive them and shower them with His mercy.

The verse beautifully combines two aspects: the sin (whether against others or against oneself) and the remedy (seeking forgiveness). It does not say that the sinner is doomed; rather, it emphasizes that Allah’s forgiveness is vast and His mercy encompasses all who call upon Him. The conditional structure "whoever does... then seeks forgiveness... will find" highlights that forgiveness is guaranteed for the sincere seeker, as Allah’s attributes of Ghafūr (Oft-Forgiving) and Raḥīm (Most Merciful) are constant and never exhausted.

This verse was revealed in a context that encouraged a man named Ṭuʿmah and his people to repent and seek forgiveness, but its message is universal and timeless. It teaches us that no matter how far we have strayed, the door of repentance is always open, and Allah’s mercy precedes His wrath. It also reminds us that true forgiveness requires action—turning to Allah with sincerity, not merely uttering words without a change of heart.

A Call to the Reader:

Dear reader, let this verse fill your heart with hope and courage. Do not let despair or shame keep you away from your Lord, for He is the Most Merciful, and His forgiveness is greater than any sin you may have committed. The moment you sincerely raise your hands in repentance, Allah is there to welcome you with open mercy. He does not turn away any servant who returns to Him, no matter how heavy their burdens. So, hasten to seek His forgiveness, for He is the One Who says: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful" (Az-Zumar 39:53). Embrace this divine invitation, and let your heart find peace in the knowledge that your Lord is Ghafūr and Raḥīm—always ready to forgive and always eager to show mercy.

📜 Verse 108-112 — An-Nisa

They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allah, of what they do, encompassing.
Here you are - those who argue on their behalf in [this] worldly life - but who will argue with Allah for them on the Day of Resurrection, or who will [then] be their representative?
And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
And whoever commits a sin only earns it against himself. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
But whoever earns an offense or a sin and then blames it on an innocent [person] has taken upon himself a slander and manifest sin.
