Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ha antum (هَا أَنتُمْ): "Here you are" — an emphatic call drawing attention to the addressees.
- Jadaltum (جَادَلْتُمْ): You argued, pleaded, or disputed in defense of someone.
- Wakeel (وَكِيلًا): A guardian, advocate, or one entrusted to manage someone's affairs and defend them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Here you are, O believers — those who were concerned about the people who betrayed themselves through treachery and sin — you argued and pleaded on their behalf in the life of this world, trying to prove their innocence and shield them from punishment. You exerted your efforts in their defense before earthly judges and authorities, hoping to secure their acquittal.
But ask yourselves: Who will argue with Allah on their behalf on the Day of Resurrection? Who will dare to plead their case before the Almighty when He knows their true reality completely — every hidden deed, every secret intention? And who could possibly act as their guardian or advocate on that Day when all protection and intercession belong solely to Allah?
The answer is clear: no one. No argument, no advocate, no defense will avail them then. All worldly pleading will cease, and every soul will stand alone before its Lord. The intercession that will benefit on that Day is only that which Allah Himself permits — and it will never be granted to those who betrayed the trust of Allah and His Messenger.
This verse serves as a profound reminder that our loyalty and defense must be rooted in truth and justice, not in blind partisanship. When we defend someone who is wrong, we may succeed in this world, but we cannot deceive the All-Knowing Judge. Let this be a call to every believer: purify your defense of others, ensure it is built upon righteousness, and remember that the ultimate judgment belongs to Allah alone — the One whose knowledge encompasses all things and whose justice is absolute. How beautiful is the faith that teaches us to be just even when defending those we love, and how merciful is the Lord who warns us before it is too late, so that we may correct our course and return to Him with sincere hearts.
