Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يُكْفَرُ بِهَا: Disbelief is expressed towards them (the verses of Allah).
- وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا: They are mocked and ridiculed.
- يَخُوضُوا: They engage themselves (in another topic of discussion).
- إِذًا مِّثْلُهُمْ: In that case, you would be like them (in sin and guilt).
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, Allah has already revealed to you in the Book (the Qur'an) a clear and decisive command: when you hear the verses of Allah being denied, rejected, or mocked, you must not remain seated in that gathering. The moment you perceive that disbelief and ridicule are being directed against Allah's signs, you are obliged to leave or, at the very least, to distance yourselves from such company—unless and until they shift their conversation to something else entirely, leaving behind their mockery and denial.
This command carries profound wisdom. By sitting with those who mock Allah's verses, even if you do not participate in their words, you give the impression of tolerating their actions. Your presence, in such a state, implies approval of their disbelief and ridicule. And the one who is pleased with an act of disobedience shares in its sin. Therefore, the Qur'an declares: if you remain seated with them while they persist in their mockery, then you are just like them—because the heart that accepts disbelief, even passively, has aligned itself with the rejecters.
This is a powerful reminder of the sanctity of Allah's words and the duty of every believer to uphold His honor. It teaches us that our company matters, and that silence in the face of blasphemy is not neutrality—it is complicity. How beautiful is this guidance, which protects the believer's faith from being eroded by the toxins of mockery and denial!
The verse concludes with a stern warning: Allah will gather the hypocrites—those who outwardly claim faith but inwardly harbor disbelief—together with the open disbelievers, and cast them all into Hellfire. This is a threat directed at both those who mock Allah's verses and those who sit and listen with approval. They will share the same fate, for they shared the same attitude of disrespect toward Allah's revelation.
Let this verse be a mirror for your soul, dear believer. Ask yourself: in whose gatherings do I sit? Whose words do I listen to? Do I defend the honor of Allah's verses when I hear them attacked, or do I remain silent? The Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited—it is a living guide that shapes our conduct, our choices, and our destiny. Embrace this guidance with love and sincerity, for it is a mercy from your Lord, steering you away from the paths that lead to His displeasure and guiding you toward His eternal pleasure and Paradise.
