Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse opens a beautiful door of mercy and high moral character for the believers. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) informs us that whatever good we do—whether we do it openly so that others may see it and be encouraged, or we do it secretly to protect our sincerity and avoid showing off—it is all known to Allah and carries immense reward. The verse then moves to an even higher level of excellence: pardoning those who have wronged us. When someone harms you, you have two options: you may seek justice and defend your rights, or you may choose the path of forgiveness and overlook the offense. While justice is permissible, the verse gently guides the believer toward the superior choice—forgiveness.

Why is forgiveness so highly encouraged? Because Allah Himself is ʿAfuwwun Qadīr—He is the One Who forgives His servants abundantly despite His complete power over them. He could punish instantly, yet He chooses mercy and pardon. When you forgive someone even though you have the ability to retaliate, you are embodying a divine attribute and following the noble example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The verse beautifully implies: if Allah—with all His might and majesty—forgives you despite your many sins, then how fitting it is for you, a weak servant, to forgive your fellow human beings for their minor offenses against you?

The verse also teaches us that goodness, whether hidden or shown, is valuable. However, hidden goodness is often purer in intention, while open goodness can inspire others. Both are acceptable, and both are rewarded. As for forgiveness, it is the crown of good character—it releases the burden of hatred from your heart and elevates your rank with Allah.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine the beauty of this teaching! Islam does not merely tell you to be good—it elevates you to the rank of those who forgive even when they are wronged. This is the character of the beloved Prophet (peace be upon him), who forgave the very people who had persecuted him. When you forgive, you are not weak; rather, you are strong in your faith and noble in your conduct. Allah loves those who pardon others, and He promises that the reward for forgiveness is with Him—far greater than any revenge could ever bring you. So open your heart, let go of grudges, and taste the sweetness of mercy. Forgive, and Allah will forgive you. Be merciful, and Allah will be merciful to you. This is the path of the righteous, the way to peace in this life and salvation in the next.

📜 Verse 147-151 — An-Nisa

What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe? And ever is Allah Appreciative and Knowing.
Allah does not like the public mention of evil except by one who has been wronged. And ever is Allah Hearing and Knowing.
If [instead] you show [some] good or conceal it or pardon an offense - indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Competent.
Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to discriminate between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between -
Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
