Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Jahr (الجهر): Speaking openly and loudly.
- As-Su' (السوء): Evil, harmful, or offensive speech.
- Man Zulim (من ظلم): The one who has been wronged or oppressed.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and justice, declares that He does not love the public utterance of evil speech—whether it be insults, curses, or harmful words—because such speech spreads discord, breaks hearts, and corrupts the soul. However, there is a clear and merciful exception: the one who has been wronged. If a person has suffered injustice, they are permitted to speak out about the wrong done to them, to seek help, or to call upon Allah against their oppressor. This is not a license for revenge or slander, but a means of justice and self-defense. The Prophet ﷺ himself taught the oppressed to say: "O Allah, help me against him, and take my right from him."
Yet, even in this permissible case, the better and more virtuous path is patience and forgiveness. The one who endures hardship and leaves his affair to Allah earns a greater reward, for Allah is ever ready to defend His righteous servants.
And Allah is *Samee'* (All-Hearing) of every word you utter, whether in public or in secret, and *Aleem* (All-Knowing) of your innermost intentions. He knows who is truly oppressed and who merely uses this as an excuse to harm others. So be mindful of your speech, for nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will judge with perfect justice.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful balance of justice and mercy. Islam does not leave the oppressed helpless, nor does it allow the spread of evil under the guise of complaint. It teaches us to raise our hands to Allah, the ultimate Judge, and to trust in His wisdom. How comforting it is to know that our Lord hears every cry of the wronged and knows every hidden pain! Let this verse inspire you to be a source of goodness in your words, to defend the oppressed gently, and to leave revenge to the One who is the Best of Judges. And if you are ever wronged, remember that patience is a treasure, and Allah’s justice is never delayed—it is simply perfect.
