Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues to enumerate the grave sins of the Children of Israel that led to Allah's severe punishment upon them. Among these sins was their practice of taking *riba* (usury/interest) despite the fact that Allah had explicitly forbidden it to them in the Torah. They were a people who had received clear divine legislation, yet they willfully transgressed its boundaries, devouring wealth through exploitative means without any sense of guilt or fear of accountability.
Furthermore, they consumed people's wealth *bil-batil*—through falsehood and injustice. This included taking bribes to pervert justice, seizing property through fraudulent schemes, and exploiting the common people through deceptive financial practices. Their corruption was not limited to one area; rather, it permeated their dealings, making them a people whose hands were stained with the unlawful earnings of others.
Because of these accumulated transgressions—their breach of covenants, their disbelief in Allah's signs, their killing of prophets, their slander against Maryam, their claim of killing the Messiah, and now their practice of usury and unjust enrichment—Allah prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment in the Hereafter. This punishment is not merely a consequence but a just recompense for their persistent arrogance and defiance of divine commands.
However, this verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity. It teaches us that wealth obtained through forbidden means—whether through interest, bribery, fraud, or any form of exploitation—is not only a sin but a cause of divine wrath and deprivation of blessings. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes that lawful provision (*rizq halal*) is a means of spiritual purity and societal harmony, while unlawful gain corrupts the heart, destroys trust, and invites calamity upon individuals and nations.
Dear reader, reflect on this: Allah does not forbid anything except for our own benefit. The prohibition of *riba* is a mercy, protecting society from the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few and the exploitation of the needy. When we abstain from what Allah has forbidden and seek our provision through lawful means, we open the doors of divine blessing and contentment. And when we repent from such sins, as the verse hints by excluding those who believe and do good, Allah's mercy is vast enough to forgive and transform our condition.
Let this verse be a reminder that true success lies not in accumulating wealth by any means, but in purifying our earnings, our hearts, and our actions in obedience to Allah. The painful punishment mentioned here is a warning, but the doors of repentance remain open for those who turn back to their Lord with sincerity.
