Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kafarū (كَفَرُوا): Those who disbelieved, rejecting the oneness of Allah and the message of His messengers.
- Wa Ẓalamū (وَظَلَمُوا): And they wronged — either themselves by persisting in disbelief, or others by concealing the truth and obstructing the path of guidance.
- Lam Yakuni Allāhu li-yaghfira lahum (لَمْ يَكُنِ اللَّهُ لِيَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ): It is not Allah’s way or will to forgive them — a definitive negation of forgiveness.
- Wa lā li-yahdiyahum ṭarīqan (وَلَا لِيَهْدِيَهُمْ طَرِيقًا): Nor to guide them to any path — meaning no way that leads to salvation or success.
Explanation of the Verse:
This profound verse draws a clear and decisive line between those who embrace faith and those who reject it while persisting in wrongdoing. Allah informs us that those who disbelieve in Him and His messengers — and who, on top of that, wrong themselves by stubbornly clinging to their disbelief, or wrong others by suppressing the truth and misleading people — have placed themselves beyond the reach of divine forgiveness and guidance.
The verse uses a powerful grammatical construction in Arabic that conveys absolute impossibility: it is not merely that Allah *will not* forgive them, but that forgiveness is *not conceivable* for them given their state. Their hearts have become sealed through their own choices. Similarly, guidance to any path of salvation is withheld from them — not because Allah is unjust, but because they have deliberately turned away from the light that was offered to them, and their persistent wrongdoing has blinded their insight.
This includes those who knew the truth, concealed it, and worked against it — like those who hid the descriptions of the final Prophet (peace be upon him) out of envy and arrogance. Their crime was twofold: disbelief in their hearts and oppression in their actions.
A Call to Reflection and Hope:
Dear reader, this verse is not meant to make you despair — rather, it is a warning that awakens the soul. It tells us that the door of forgiveness is wide open for those who turn back to Allah sincerely, but it also teaches us that persisting in disbelief and injustice until the very end closes that door. The mercy of Allah is vast, but it is for those who seek it while they still have the chance.
So let this verse be a reminder: do not let pride or stubbornness keep you from the truth. Do not let your past mistakes define your future. The moment you sincerely turn to Allah, His forgiveness and guidance will embrace you. But do not delay, for no one knows when the final moment will come. Today, the door is open — knock on it with a sincere heart, and you will find your Lord waiting with mercy beyond measure.
