The Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:
This verse paints a vivid picture of a deeply flawed character—one that Allah Himself does not love. It describes those who are miserly with the wealth and blessings Allah has granted them, refusing to spend in charity, in supporting their families, or in the cause of truth. But their sin does not stop at their own withholding; they go further and actively encourage others to be stingy as well, spreading this vile trait through their words and their example. They become preachers of greed, calling people away from generosity and toward hoarding.
Moreover, they conceal what Allah has given them from His bounty—whether it be wealth, knowledge, or the truth itself. They hide the signs of Allah, they suppress the truth about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that was recorded in their scriptures, and they refuse to share the beneficial knowledge they possess. Instead of being channels of Allah's mercy to humanity, they become barriers, locking away the treasures of guidance and provision.
These traits—miserliness, commanding others to be miserly, and concealing Allah's favors—are characteristics of disbelief. They stem from a heart that is arrogant and boastful, one that fears poverty and clings to the world. For such people, Allah has prepared a humiliating punishment in the Hereafter—a torment that will expose their shame and degrade them in the sight of all creation, as a fitting recompense for their pride and their refusal to acknowledge Allah's blessings.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. Allah loves the generous, the open-handed, and those who share His blessings freely. He has placed wealth in your hands not as a possession to hoard, but as a trust to circulate. When you give, you do not lose—you gain Allah's love, His reward, and His increase. And when you possess knowledge, share it; when you have truth, proclaim it. Do not be among those who lock the doors of goodness, for their end is a punishment that humiliates. Open your hands, open your heart, and let the light of Allah's bounty flow through you to others. This is the path of the beloved servants of Allah—those who spend, who guide, and who never conceal the truth. Be among them, and you will find honor in this life and the next.
