Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Jibt (الجبت): Every object of worship other than Allah, including idols, false deities, and anything that leads away from the truth.
- At-Taghut (الطاغوت): Every tyrant, false authority, or devil—whether from among humans or jinn—who is obeyed in opposition to Allah’s command and who calls people to transgression and disbelief.
- Ahlā (أهدى): More rightly guided, more correct in path.
- Sabīlan (سبيلاً): A way, path, or religion.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Have you not seen, O Messenger, and wondered at the astonishing state of those Jews who were given a portion of the Scripture—knowledge of the Torah and its teachings? Yet despite this knowledge, they believe in false deities and every object of worship besides Allah, and they submit to the authority of tyrants and devils who lead them away from Allah’s law. Their belief is not a mere intellectual acceptance; rather, it drives them to abandon the divine revelation and turn to man-made systems and false judgments.
Even more shocking, they say to those who disbelieve in Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him)—specifically the polytheists of Quraysh, such as Abu Sufyan and his companions—"These disbelievers are more rightly guided in their way than those who believe in Muhammad and follow his message." They made this statement to flatter the pagans and to win their alliance in their enmity against the Prophet and his followers. This occurred when the Jewish leader Huyayy ibn Akhtab and his companions went to Quraysh to form an alliance against the Prophet; the pagans demanded that the Jews prostrate to their idols as a condition, and the Jews complied—thus revealing the depth of their deviation.
How could people who possess knowledge of the divine books utter such a falsehood? How could they prefer polytheism and idolatry over the pure monotheism brought by the final Messenger? This verse exposes their corruption and serves as a stern warning to all who possess knowledge yet trade it for misguidance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse and let it awaken your heart. Here were people who had the Scripture, who knew of the coming of a final prophet, and who were expected to be the first to embrace the truth—yet they turned to idols and tyrants, and even dared to declare that the disbelievers were better guided than the believers! This is the ultimate tragedy: knowledge without action, and learning without sincerity.
Let this be a lesson for us all. Knowledge of the Quran and the Sunnah is a great blessing, but it becomes a proof against us if we do not live by it. Do not let worldly desires, tribal loyalties, or the flattery of the powerful turn you away from the straight path. The believer who follows the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is truly the one upon the clearest guidance, even if the whole world disagrees. Hold fast to your faith, for it is the only path that leads to Allah’s pleasure and to eternal success in the Hereafter.
