Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الطاغوت (At-Taghut): Everything worshipped or obeyed besides Allah, including false deities, tyrants, and any system of judgment that contradicts Allah's revealed law.
- يَتَحَاكَمُوا (Yatahakamu): To seek judgment and arbitration in disputes.
- ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا (Dalalan Ba'eeda): A far-reaching misguidance — one that takes a person completely away from the truth with no hope of return.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have you not seen, O Messenger, the astonishing contradiction of those hypocrites who falsely claim to believe in what has been revealed to you — the Qur'an — and in what was revealed to the prophets before you? Yet despite this claim, when disputes arise among them, they turn away from Allah's law and seek judgment from false systems and human-made laws that contradict divine revelation. They have been clearly commanded to reject such falsehood and disbelieve in it, yet they still rush to it willingly.
This verse exposes the deep hypocrisy of those who profess faith with their tongues while their hearts and actions betray that claim. True faith is not a mere statement — it is a commitment that demands complete submission to Allah's judgment in every matter, big or small. When a person claims to believe in Allah and His Messenger, yet prefers the judgment of human systems, tribal customs, or man-made laws over the clear rulings of the Qur'an and Sunnah, their claim is exposed as false.
The verse then reveals the hidden force behind this behavior: Satan himself. It is he who beautifies this misguidance in their hearts, leading them step by step away from the light of truth into a darkness so deep that they cannot find their way back. The distance they travel from guidance is not a small deviation — it is a complete departure that leaves them lost and confused.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful verse. It serves as a timeless warning for every Muslim, in every era. The test of faith is not in claiming belief, but in how we resolve our disputes and make our decisions. When you face a conflict in your family, your business, or your community — where do you turn for judgment? Do you turn to Allah's Book and His Messenger's guidance, or do you look elsewhere?
This verse invites you to examine your own heart. It reminds us that Islam is not a partial commitment — it is a complete way of life. The beauty of our faith is that Allah has given us a perfect system that guarantees justice, mercy, and wisdom in all affairs. No human system, no matter how sophisticated, can match the perfection of divine law.
So let this be your moment of awakening. Renew your commitment to Allah's judgment in all matters. Let the Qur'an be your constitution, and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ be your guide. For whoever submits fully to Allah will find peace, justice, and success in this life and the next. And beware of Satan's whispers that make false systems appear attractive — for his goal is nothing less than to lead you far astray from the straight path.
