Key Words and Phrases:

  • Aʿraḍū (أَعْرَضُوا): To turn away, to disregard, or to reject something after it has been clearly presented.
  • Andhartukum (أَنذَرْتُكُمْ): I have warned you, or I have made you fearful of a consequence.
  • Ṣāʿiqah (صَاعِقَة): A thunderbolt, a catastrophic blast, or a destructive punishment that strikes suddenly and annihilates. In this context, it signifies a divinely sent calamity of utter destruction.
  • ʿĀd (عَاد): The ancient, mighty tribe of the Prophet Hūd, known for their immense physical strength and arrogance, who were destroyed by a furious, devastating wind.
  • Thamūd (ثَمُود): The tribe of the Prophet Ṣāliḥ, who carved their homes into mountains but were destroyed by a single, terrifying blast (al-Ṣayḥah) after they rejected the sign of the she-camel.

The Interpretation:

If these disbelievers, after all the clear proofs and the magnificent descriptions of the Qur’an have been laid before them, still turn away in pride and stubbornness—then, O Messenger, do not grieve over them. Instead, deliver the decisive warning: "I have warned you of a thunderbolt of punishment like the thunderbolt of ʿĀd and Thamūd."

This is not an empty threat. It is a reminder of a living, witnessed reality. The people of ʿĀd and Thamūd were not mythical nations lost in the distant past; their ruined dwellings and desolate remains stood along the very trade routes the Quraysh of Makkah traveled to Syria and Yemen. They saw the hollowed-out mountains of Thamūd and the remnants of ʿĀd’s grandeur, yet they failed to take heed. Those nations were given power, wealth, and long lives—far more than the disbelievers of Makkah—but when they rejected their messengers and persisted in transgression, the punishment of Allah seized them suddenly and utterly destroyed them.

So the warning here is both a threat and a mercy. It is a threat to those who persist in disbelief, that the same fate awaits them if they do not repent. And it is a mercy because it comes *before* the punishment, giving them a final chance to turn back to their Lord. The door of repentance remains open, but the warning is clear: the patience of Allah is vast, yet when His decree comes, no power on earth can repel it.

Reflect, dear reader, on the gravity of this message. The Qur’an is not a book of stories for entertainment; it is a book of living signs. The destruction of past nations is a mirror held up to humanity. If you see the same arrogance, the same rejection of truth, and the same love for this fleeting world in yourself, then this verse is a direct call to you: return to Allah before the thunderbolt strikes. For the mercy of Allah is nearer to you than your own jugular vein, and His forgiveness encompasses all sins for those who sincerely repent. Do not let the example of ʿĀd and Thamūd be a lesson you merely hear about—make it a lesson that transforms your heart and guides your steps to the straight path.

📜 Verse 11-15 — Fussilat

Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."
And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps and as protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] 'Aad and Thamud.
[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."
As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
